My dog has a hoarse voice and sore throat. Can I give him medicine?

Hi there! I am sorry to hear Baby is not feeling well. Unfortunately there is nothing you can give to soothe the throat, it just has to heal and rest. I not use any topical medications to avoid adverse reaction to them. I would recommend trying to keep Baby away from things that you know will cause him to want to bark while he is being treated. The important thing is that it sounds as though the coughing is under control and that will definitely help rest his throat. Hopefully this helps answer your question. Dog can have a couple different barking sounds, and it could be that he changes his bark based on the occasion. Sometimes, excessive barking can cause irritation to the vocal cords and the barks after this can sound weird or hoarse. This should heal with time if you can prevent additional barking. Unless the issue is coming from a bacterial infection, it is unlikely that antibiotics will help. Anti-inflammatory medications may have a better effect, but the issue will continue if your dog continues to bark excessively. Yes, he probably has a mild upper respiratory infection or cold. That can cause a sore throat and change in their bark. This usually is a viral infection that will run its course in a few days to a week. Please let him rest and try to limit the excitement and reduce any barking. It could take 1-3 weeks to have Brunos voice return from over use. Cetrizine also known as zyrtex is an anti histamine. This will help if Bruno is having any irritation due to allergies. Usually it does not help with just mild inflammation.

He probably has some laryngitis. I suggest you start walking him with a harness instead of a collar. He could be damaging his trachea (windpipe) by too much pulling. The laryngitis should resolve on it's own with no treatment. If it does not, in about a week, then he should see your vet.

Benadryl would not help with a sore throat because Benadryl is an anti histamine. Typically for a sore throat you would use an anti inflammatory. However if you feel like he has a mild allergy Benadryl could help. Benadryl can provide a small level of sedation depending on the pet.

Perfect, you should give the medication some time to work, up to 10 days. As long as he is getting better within this time then he should be ok and his voice will return. However, if he is not doing better or if he is doing worse, then make sure you bring him back to his veterinarian immediately.
