Dog can have a couple different barking sounds, and it could be that he changes his bark based on the occasion. Sometimes, excessive barking can cause irritation to the vocal cords and the barks after this can sound weird or hoarse. This should heal with time if you can prevent additional barking. Unless the issue is coming from a bacterial infection, it is unlikely that antibiotics will help. The time it takes varies from dog to dog. If he has lost his bark from excessive barking, it will eventually come back. Artificial chew bones are ok to give but be cautious as the hard chews can break teeth and if he chews chunks off and swallows them, this could pose a risk for an intestinal obstruction. If you are concerned about his bark, you could always have a vet examine him to ensure everything else is ok and to figure out if there is another cause of his hoarse bark.

NO! Do not give any Azithromycin. That will not help this problem. The only thing that helps a hoarse voice to rest it so if you can, try to keep him from barking. It is not life threatening. My guess is that he may have a touch of kennel cough and it will usually resolves within 10-14 days. He probably has some laryngitis. I suggest you start walking him with a harness instead of a collar. He could be damaging his trachea (windpipe) by too much pulling. The laryngitis should resolve on it's own with no treatment. If it does not, in about a week, then he should see your vet.

This does not sound like a typical Kennel cough, which is usually responsive to antibiotics within 3-4 days, and then goes away after stopping medication in about 10 days time. There is something else going on here, which could include any of the following: an underlying heart condition (the heart and lungs are very much involved with each other), laryngeal paralysis (causes coughing in young adult dogs but not as common as other disorders), lung parasite, fungal infection of the lungs. You will have to get some testing done at this point to determine what the underlying cause is so that we know how best to treat Bruno moving forward.
