My dog has a raspy bark. Is it a sore throat, cold, or something else?

Hi there! I am sorry to hear Baby is not feeling well. Unfortunately there is nothing you can give to soothe the throat, it just has to heal and rest. I not use any topical medications to avoid adverse reaction to them. I would recommend trying to keep Baby away from things that you know will cause him to want to bark while he is being treated. The important thing is that it sounds as though the coughing is under control and that will definitely help rest his throat. Hopefully this helps answer your question. Hi there! I would recommend having this checked out by your vet when you're able to. A wheezing sound in the throat, hoarseness, and/or a raspy quality to her panting or breathing are all concerning for something interfering with normal air flow in the back of her throat. This could be due to laryngeal paralysis, a growth or tumor, a foreign body, or something simple like a respiratory infection causing some swelling or inflammation in this area. Your vet can do a complete oral exam under sedation if needed to get a better look at her throat, and may also recommend x-rays or other testing to help check for abnormalities.

Dog can have a couple different barking sounds, and it could be that he changes his bark based on the occasion. Sometimes, excessive barking can cause irritation to the vocal cords and the barks after this can sound weird or hoarse. This should heal with time if you can prevent additional barking. Unless the issue is coming from a bacterial infection, it is unlikely that antibiotics will help. Anti-inflammatory medications may have a better effect, but the issue will continue if your dog continues to bark excessively. Give him plenty of water, and try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity may help to soothe his throat. I don't think you need to take him back into a vet now, I'd just keep an eye on him. I hope this helps!

It's hard to say, but if there is concern about something being stuck in the throat, I would have Bruno examined by a vet ASAP. Sometimes infections that cause kennel cough can cause these symptoms, but it is safer to rule out a possible foreign body or blockage first.

This could be due to a degeneration of the laryngeal nerve that is innervating the larynx being in charge of its movement (vocal chords included). Inflammation of this nerve and upper respiratory airways infection is possible as well. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed. It could be kennel cough, scratch in the throat from chewing on hard objects or swelling in the throat from being stung in the throat by an insect. As long as your dog is acting as normal, eating food and keeping it down you should monitor him at home. Kennel cough symptoms usually resolve within 7-10 days without treatment. However, if your dog continues to cough or becomes lethargic and off food, you should get him checked by your local vets.
