Dog has hoarse bark, acts normal. Is it from pulling on leash?

It is possible that this is all related to Rose pulling a lot in the leash which ultimately could have resulted in some degree of tracheitis. This usually improves on its own relatively quickly. If this does not resolve in the next 3-5 days, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. At that point, if nothing else is wrong, they may choose to start her on an anti-inflammatory medication. Good luck and have a great day!

Sorry to hear that Bruno's lost his bark. A change in barking sound or a loss of bark can be associated with a few different conditions. While a collapsing trachea or an upper respiratory infection are certain possibilities, they are not the most common cause for this symptom. There is a condition known as laryngeal paralysis that is known to cause this symptom quite frequently. Regardless of what the cause is, it is unlikely to resolve on its own without some treatment. You should take Bruno into the vet for a physical exam and some diagnostic imaging. They will be able to tell you whether or not one of the above mentioned conditions is causing Bruno's current issues. Hope this helps!

This could have various causes, the most common one would be an infection with kennel cough which can cause excessive coughing which in turn can make the dog hoarse and so diminish her bark. There are more serious causes such as laryngeal paralysis, a vocal chord swelling or tumor and other conditions that make it hard for the vocal chords to vibrate and make the correct sound. mechanical interference such as an ingested and stuck foxtail, piece of bone , etc. which can cause an abscess in that region. Trauma and nerve damage, hypothyroidism and autoimmune conditions can also change the bark. So, you can see that this is a complicated subject. Your vet is trained to properly examine your dog and diagnose your dog's condition. Depending on the cause, medications may be indicated, rest, or surgery (in case of a tumor or abscess). An appointment with your vet will be the best.

Dog can have a couple different barking sounds, and it could be that he changes his bark based on the occasion. Sometimes, excessive barking can cause irritation to the vocal cords and the barks after this can sound weird or hoarse. This should heal with time if you can prevent additional barking. Unless the issue is coming from a bacterial infection, it is unlikely that antibiotics will help. Anti-inflammatory medications may have a better effect, but the issue will continue if your dog continues to bark excessively. If Panfilo has been barking a lot and playing lately, it is possible that he developed a hoarse bark due to overuse. Similar to humans when a person screams / yells for a while, the voice becomes hoarse. His bark should come back normally without any lasting problems. I hope this helps! Older large breed dogs can sometimes get a condition known as laryngeal paralysis. The voice doesn't completely go away, but it can definitely become quieter or more hoarse. She could also have infectious tracheobronchitis, known also as kennel cough, as this can make the voice more hoarse. If she does not stop coughing in the next 1 - 2 days, or gets worse, I would take her right back in. Sometimes x-rays can look normal even when serious problems, such as pneumonia, are brewing.

It sounds like your dog may have a collapsing trachea causing the cough. It would be a good idea to use a harness instead of a collar. Your vet can also prescribe medications to help if the condition persists or becomes more frequent. A bronchodilator and cough suppressant may help.
