My dog has sudden bumps and his hair is standing up. Is it hives?

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Chuggers! It’s hard to say if the red bumps are pustules (white center) which indicates a bacterial infection. The rash could be a contact allergy or hives. I would start Benadryl and if the bumps are still there Monday take him to your vet for an exam. Steroids, antibiotics or a topical medication may be needed. Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Oh dear, this sounds like Bella has hives indicating an allergic reactions to something she was exposed to. Please take her into a veterinarian right away for treatment. She will need antihistamines and a steroid. Whatever she was exposed to needs to be identified so she does not have a reaction like this again. Best of luck!

Hello, these are hives so Max is having an allergic reaction to something. He may have been bitten by something or inhaled dust & pollen that initiated the reaction. If he is acting normal, this will probably subside over the next 6-12 hours. If he is in any distress at all, itching, wheezing, drooling or vomiting, he needs veterinary attention. If he does not seem bothered by the bumps, you can try bathing him in a mild oatmeal based shampoo, using only cool water. Let the shampoo sit for about 10 minutes before rinsing. If need be you can repeat this tomorrow. If you are at all worried about how he is acting, please see your veterinarian who has the medications necessary to treat this issue. Poor Bowzer, it looks like he is having an allergic reaction. He should be see by a veterinarian so that they can administer allergy medications and control his symptoms. Other signs of allergy include a swollen face, vomiting, and lethargy in addition to the hives you are currently seeing. More severe complications with allergies include difficulty breathing. Please have Bowzer evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible so that he gets medications. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hi, I'm Dr. Johnson. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Jamo! It sounds like Jamo is having an allergic reaction and the raised red bumps are hives. Another possibility is a skin infection. Hives could be from an insect bite, a reaction to something she ate or an environmental allergen. Boxers tend to be a sensitive breed! Ideally I recommend that you bring her to your Vet to have her looked at, I understand your financial dilemma. They will know best the difference between an infection and hives. An infection requires antibiotics while hives from an allergic reaction require steroids and an antihistamine. You could try 2 tablets of 25mg generic benadryl every 8 hours. Just make sure there are no other drugs or decongestants in the benadryl. I wish you the best of luck
