My dog gets hives and bumps outside. Could it be seasonal allergies?

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poo Chevy! It is likely that the bumps are hives and Chevy is suffering from an allergic reaction. Sometime we never know the inciting cause but insects or environmental allergens are the most common, unless he is receiving medications or was recently vaccinated (in the last 24 hours). The standard treatment for hives is benadryl and steroids. Ideally you should have him seen by your Vet. Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Oh dear, this sounds like Bella has hives indicating an allergic reactions to something she was exposed to. Please take her into a veterinarian right away for treatment. She will need antihistamines and a steroid. Whatever she was exposed to needs to be identified so she does not have a reaction like this again. Best of luck!

If Oscar is having allergy issues I would consider discussing Apoquel with your veterinarian. This is an allergy medication that works very well for dogs. The spots you are referring to may either be hives or a secondary skin infection. WIthout seeing them it is hard to say exactly what they are. Hi, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. From your pictures it appears that Kona may have hives. Monitor her closely for any other signs of illness. If she vomits any more, the bumps spread or get bigger, or she has any other itching she should go to an emergency clinic. Any coughing or swelling of her face and she needs to be treated immediately. She may have gotten stung or bitten by an insect or having a reaction to a plant in the grass. In some cases, giving a dose benedryl can help. I hope Kona is feeling better soon.

Hi and thank you for using PetCoach. Mojo's bumps could be due to an allergic reaction or allergies to fleas, the environment allergens or food. I would make sure that Mojo is on proper flea medication. If he has environmental allergies, you can consider trying some Benadryl for now. There are other medications that can help mitigate environmental allergies. I would visit your veterinarian to find out what may be best for Mojo. Food allergies are also definitely possible as well. Dogs can get food allergies even if they have been on the same food for a while. Typically they are allergic to the protein in the food. Before starting a food trial with a novel protein, I would talk to your veterinarian. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

It could be a bacterial infection, fungal infection, mites, or due to an allergy to something in her environment or to a particular food. Your veterinarian can diagnose these potential conditions with an exam and a few simple skin tests. I would recommend Skyy visit her vet soon to have the possibilities above ruled out so she can get the most appropriate treatment.
