My dog was hit by a car and can't lie down from leg pain. What to do?

Hello. I am so sorry for Kobe. He needs to be kept on some pain medication, perhaps as long as a week or 10 days. Call your vet in the morning so that he is not without pain medication all weekend. You can also gently treat his neck with heat & cold compresses. Alternate with a fresh towel out of the dryer for 10 minutes, then use a cold compress ( bag of peas wrapped in a towel ) for 10 minutes. Do this 2-3 times daily to help with his discomfort. It sounds like your dog is likely in extreme pain, and he needs veterinary attention immediately. He may have fractures, internal injuries and bleeding, and may even have neurological issues from being hit by the car. If you mean that he is unable to urinate, that is a medical emergency, and requires immediate veterinary care. Your vet will assess him and recommend appropriate treatment, which will likely include pain medication, imaging and possibly surgical repair. Do not give pain medication to him without checking with your vet, as pain medications for humans can be toxic to dogs. Good luck, and I hope he feels better soon!

Poor Raven! I'm sorry to hear that she was hit by a car. It's good that she's already been seen by a vet, and it sounds like she's on a few different medications to help control her pain level and keep her as comfortable as possible. It's not surprising that she's sore, given that she suffered a serious trauma recently. It's fine to let her just go to the bathroom where she is laying for now - you can put potty pads or towels underneath her, and just change them when they get wet or soiled. She'll likely be more comfortable if she stays quiet and still rather than trying to walk outside. I would not recommend giving any kind of human OTC medication, as she's on several different meds for pain already and this would not be safe to do. If you still think she seems overly painful tomorrow morning, you can call your veterinarian to ask about adding in another prescription medication such as tramadol, and/or increasing the dose on some of her other meds. Your vet can advise you on safe dosages based on her condition and her overall treatment plan.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Fluffy! I am so sorry that Fluffy was hit by a car! I think it is important to get back, hip and pelvis X-rays to see if any bones are broken. If there are broken bones he may need surgery to fix them. If the spine is broken that is serious. If all the bones are fine then I would be worried about neurologic problems which sadly are more serious. Neurological problems may or may not get better and need a lot of time. Be sure he is urinating, eating and drinking. If not he should be hospitalized. Sort of hospitalizing and getting a diagnosis via X-rays there is not much else to do but provide supportive care, keep him clean and warm and give him pain medications as prescribed. I am sorry to hear that. It sounds like she may be painful. Call your and see about getting her in for a recheck exam. If there is an emergency vet near you, I would recommend that you take her in to be seen. Unfortunately without seeing her and without knowing if she's received any medications at home, I cannot advise you to give her anything at home to help, she just needs to be seen by a vet. Hello, sorry to hear about Macie. Yes indeed she could have a broken bone after being hit by car. She could also have torn a ligament or another soft tissue structure in her joint. This is likely causing her to be lame and not want to walk on her leg. She will need to have x-rays of her leg and a full orthopedic and neurologic examination to ensure she does not have an injury. Alternatively, she may be sore from the trauma of the car hitting her and she may need 3-5 days to improve. Despite this, any pet that was hit by a car should be evaluated as some injuries may be internal and this may be difficult to see without a thorough physical exam. Hope this helps and best of luck.
