My puppy was hit by a car and can't stand. What should I do immediately?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 6 days old

Hi, my 5 weeks old puppy has been hit by a vehicle. He is not standing on his hind legs. I have given him Brufen syrup and applied iodex on his affected legs. Should I continue with this treatment or try something else. What should I do. Please help.

I am so sorry that Fluffy was hit by a car! I think it is important to get back, hip and pelvis X-rays to see if any bones are broken. If there are broken bones he may need surgery to fix them. If the spine is broken that is serious. If all the bones are fine then I would be worried about neurologic problems which sadly are more serious. Neurological problems may or may not get better and need a lot of time. Be sure he is urinating, eating and drinking. If not he should be hospitalized. Sort of hospitalizing and getting a diagnosis via X-rays there is not much else to do but provide supportive care, keep him clean and warm and give him pain medications as prescribed.

It sounds like your dog is likely in extreme pain, and he needs veterinary attention immediately. He may have fractures, internal injuries and bleeding, and may even have neurological issues from being hit by the car. If you mean that he is unable to urinate, that is a medical emergency, and requires immediate veterinary care. Your vet will assess him and recommend appropriate treatment, which will likely include pain medication, imaging and possibly surgical repair. Do not give pain medication to him without checking with your vet, as pain medications for humans can be toxic to dogs. Good luck, and I hope he feels better soon!

Poor kebbi. I would be very concerned about possible spinal or pelvic injury, especially with the amount of bruising and inability to stand. Xrays would be recommended to determine the extent of any bone injury, alongside pain relief and antiinflammatory meds to reduce swelling around the affected area which can lead reduced nerve function

Oh poor Buddy! Unfortunately, this is a serious problem! I worry that he may have seriously injured himself. Dogs that are hit by cars can have several different types of injuries from minor scrapes and bruises to severe issues like punctured lungs, broken bones, or even a ruptured spleen or bladder. There isn't anything great you can do at home to help him. The main thing is to keep his confined and watch him closely. If you notice any labored breathing or if his gums are not a pink color then I would try to get him to the emergency clinic ASAP as it could be a life threatening emergency. I would not recommend to give him any human pain meds as most are toxic to dogs. I hope this helps and he is okay!

My dog was hit by a car. How to help his broken pelvis heal and walk?

Hello. I am so sorry about Ponpon's injuries. Without seeing an x-ray, I can only surmise that the fractures are to the pelvic bones. It is very difficult to try & surgically repair the fractured pieces & especially in such a young pup, we often just leave them to heal on their own. It usually takes 4-6 weeks for complete healing, but Ponpon may be up & walking sooner. It is important to restrict his activity. He should stay in one area, preferably a large enough crate that gives him the room to stand, turn around & stretch out comfortably. He should only be walked on a leash & use a towel or hip lift support harness to assist him. With time, hopefully he will make a full recovery. He should be seen by a vet right away. Even though he is moving all of his extremities well, he may have internal injuries that need treatment. He could have a slow bleed, rupture of an organ, etc. Medical attention is very important.

My dog hit by car, road rash, can't walk on hind legs. What to do?

Besides monitoring and resting her, there isn't much more you can do at home, especially if she has internal injuries and/or any fractures or other orthopedic injuries. If she isn't walking on her hind limbs than she could have a fracture, dislocated hip, etc and may need treatment, depending on the cause. Without an x-ray, it is impossible to know the extent of her injury. She really needs to be seen by a vet to examine her and determine if treatment is needed. If you are unable to take her to a vet than you could rest her and monitor for improvement. You could use a towel sling under her belly to help get her outside to use the bathroom.
