My dog's monocytes are slightly high before dental. Should I worry?

A high ALT should be monitored and if persistent should be worked up to try to find out the cause. Sometimes a high ALT can be transient in which case it may resolve on its own. Other possible reasons include hepatitis, an infection, among other reasons. That number is not that high so monitoring would be appropriate. They could extend the panel to look for liver function tests to make sure that the liver is working completely fine just to be extra cautious. This would entail measuring bile acids. Good luck!

Hi ! I was wondering if blood tests have been run to check for Cushing’s disease. This condition would also cause an elevation of liver enzymes. It really depends on the exact blood work that is being done. If it is just a routine CBC and Chemistry profile then he probably doesn't need to be fasted. If the blood-work is being done the same day as the procedure then he should be fasted because of the procedure. You should probably call your vet for specific instructions. I am sure it is worrisome to put your dog under anesthesia but the benefits of cleaning the teeth and extracting the diseased teeth outweighs the risks of the anesthesia. As long as he is healthy, the risk is minimal.

Congratulations on the new boy! I see nothing here that concerns me very much. In fact, it’s pretty dang great for a dog Om’s age. Most of the changes are minimal enough to ignore in my opinion. The globulin (antibody) level is likely high due to the dental disease (although fungal infection and cancer can raise this level too). The BUN and creatinine (kidney values) are sitting at high-normal levels which could mean he’s very slightly dehydrated. I’d consider running this panel again in 3-6 months just to make sure those haven’t crept up into an abnormal range. (Sooner of course if any weight loss, increased drinking/urination, vomiting, etc.) Overall some pretty boring bloodwork! Hope this helps you rest easy and congrats again on Om!

This is certainly a somewhat common scenario unfortunately and it is important to make sure that the potential risks do not outweigh the benefits. That is why I can understand your veterinarian's concerns. Your veterinarian could consider a course of doxycycline or clindamycin antibiotic which are commonly used for dental disease as an important component of it is likely due to an infection. Also, it would be important to make sure that you clean her teeth regularly as that is likely going to help as well. Good luck and have a great day!

I can see the results, but I'm unable to see the reference ranges for each value which can vary based on the machine so it's a little difficult to say for certain what these changes could mean. It looks to me like the monocytes and lymphocytes (specific types of white blood cells) are a little low - this could be a stress response which is very normal for a dog having it's blood drawn in the hospital. Some dogs simply lie on the lower end of the reference range as well. I can't think of any disease where low lymphocytes and monocytes in the absence of other changes would be significant, and this would not raise a flag for possible cancer in my mind. Red cell distribution width (RDW) gives an idea of the average size of a red blood cell and mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCH) tells how much hemoglobin is present in each cell - these parameters are really only significant when there is also anemia or low hematocrit. If you have other concerns you should definitely follow up with your vet - it's always easiest for the doctor who has examined the animal and is familiar with the case to interpret lab results!

Most of the problems or deaths under anesthesia are unpredictable and can happen to any age. Doing blood work and checking for any underlying issues like a heart murmur before surgery is great. Anesthesia is monitored closely by the veterinary nurses: blood pressure, oxygen levels, EKG, animals are intubated and are on oxygen and on IV fluids. There are health risks to leaving diseased teeth in the mouth as well. Overall if Angel is a healthy senior I think she will do fine! Good luck!
