My dog has bad teeth & heart murmur. Swollen lymph nodes: what to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Female | spayed | 10 years and 11 months old | 10 lbs

My Miniature Pinscher has severely bad teeth but also has a heart murmur. They have determined it to be too risky to give her anesthesia to clean her teeth. She also has swollen lymph nodes in her neck do to her bad teeth. My question is what do I do about the lymph nodes if they cannot take care of her teeth due to the risk of dying under anesthesia?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is certainly a somewhat common scenario unfortunately and it is important to make sure that the potential risks do not outweigh the benefits. That is why I can understand your veterinarian's concerns. Your veterinarian could consider a course of doxycycline or clindamycin antibiotic which are commonly used for dental disease as an important component of it is likely due to an infection. Also, it would be important to make sure that you clean her teeth regularly as that is likely going to help as well. Good luck and have a great day!
