My puppy has a high fever, but the vet says he's okay. Should I worry?

Poor guy. Not every pet with a fever has an infection, so if the antibiotic isn’t working it’s either because there is no infection, the infection is internal, or the antibiotic is not the right kind of antibiotic for the infection. Your pet needs additional testing to sort this out and make sure we are on the right track with treatment. I would start with baseline bloodwork and a urinalysis. Best to take your pet back in to your vet or to another vet for a second opinion here so that we can get a proper diagnosis and tailored treatment based on your pets specific problem. Those are normal temperatures for dogs. If the puppy is lethargic and not eating then he needs to visit a vet. I would be worried that he could have a viral disease like parvovirus. I do think you should be a bit worried about him.

I am sorry to hear he is not feeling well. I would highly encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible. Young puppies need nutrition and will Parrish quickly without it. Viral infections such as parvovirus can cause fever and inappetance as well as many other possibilities. I would not regard a temperature taken during or right after a car ride as this could raise the temperature from anxiety. Continue on all the medications given to you by your vet as s/he prescribed. A fever this high is usually indicative of a bacterial or viral disease going on. Your veterinarian will need to run some tests to try and determine the cause of the fever. Once the cause is identified the proper antibiotics, antifungals, or antipruritic drugs can be prescribed. The tablet given to your dog is basically a fever reducer but will not treat the cause of the fever. I would recommend taking your dog in for a recheck as soon as you’re able to. A fever is very concerning, especially in a pup this young. I would have him seen as soon as possible to figure out the source of the fever. There are many causes of fever, but certainly infection would be a consideration, and quite worrisome, in a pup this young. A fever is possible. You can take a rectal temperature. He may a fever if it is over 102. If he has a fever, it should be checked out by a vet. There are no recommend at home treatments for fever in dogs that are safe. Do not attempt to cool him since you can easily make puppies hypothermic. Either way, I would recommend that he get checked out by a vet to see if there is a possible reaction to his current ringworm treatment.
