What's the typical vet bill for dog hemorrhagic gastroenteritis?

Hello. I am so sorry for the loss of your puppy. When such a young dog has such severe symptoms, survival is very unlikely. I do not know the basis for your decision - if it was an economic decision or something else, but hospitalization with aggressive fluid therapy would have been the only chance to save Sassy. Stomach medicine is a part of the therapy, but IV fluids are very important, & even with this, Sassy may not have survived. Vomiting blood is an unusual symptom of HGE, so it is possible something else was at work here, but none the less, it was severe. I am so sorry for your loss. Please accept my condolences.

My best advice is to be persistent with questions you have and make sure they get answered. ER and ICU vets are usually busy and preoccupied with their patients, but be sure to ask if you don't understand something explained or ask to have it explained again. I would want to understand why they think HGE occurred in Sancho, what they are currently doing and why, and what outlook does this have given Sancho's response to treatment? What are possible outcomes? For example they did a blood transfusion, I, as an owner would want to know why and what are the chances of this treatment being successful? Haemorrhagic gastroenteritis can take a massive toal on any dog. Bunty stands the best chance by staying in the vets on fluids until his guts can fight off the infection and rejuvenate. There is no guarantee that he will make it though, but it can take up to a week on fluids before they feel better.

Some dogs can develop pancreatitis or HGE after a change in food (or quantity of food). Yes. I would definitely take him to an emergency clinic immediately. Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis can come on very quickly and dogs can become very sick in a few hours. Poor dog. Bloody loose stool is called hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE) and is commonly caused by stress on the GI tract, although other possibilities are still possible. Which is why it is always recommended to get your pet checked by your veterinarian for a full exam, to make sure they are stable. And then the pet is typically prescribed an antibiotic (i.e. Metronidazole) and a probiotic to help the pet recover from this episode. Care has to be taken in the future to avoid stressful events, and also to limit food changes that can upset the GI (gastrointestinal) tract again, causing another bout of HGE. Personally I would only withold fluid if a dog was vomiting profusely, I would still let it drink if it has diarrohea as it is at risk of dehydration. You could ring your vet to discuss this as a dog who is not on IV fluids should have access to water.
