My dog is in heat and can't urinate. What's causing this problem?

I recommend calling your veterinarian in the morning and scheduling an appointment to have her looked at. There could be a few different reasons for blood in the urine. She can have a urinary tract infection, bladder stones, a kidney issue or even a bladder mass. I would recommend bringing a urine sample to have them evaluate it and see if Trinity has a urinary tract infection. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sometimes female dogs will urine mark when they are in heat (having their period). But if Chica is having small, frequent urinations with straining she may have a urinary tract infection unrelated to being in heat. I recommend collecting a urine sample and taking Chica to your Vet for an exam. They can check her urine for infection. I hope this helps and I wish Chica a speedy recovery!

I would try to collect a urine sample and bring it with you for an appointment with your Vet. If she has an infection they can provide her with antibiotics. When dogs are in heat they sometimes act lethargic. She is a bit young to have an infected uterus as they do drink and urinate more. It is best to have her examined. I wish you the best!

This may be due to inflammation or infection in the urinary tract. Stones or crystals can also cause bloody urine. Ideally, Mia should be physically examined by your veterinarian. Abdominal x-rays may be indicated along with a urinalysis and urine culture. If necessary, your vet may dispense an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory.

I would be suspicious there is another cause for the change in behavior. Swelling of the vulva happens early on in the heat cycle but everybody is different. With her age it’s possible she may not proceed quite as normal since she is young. It’s possible she does not feel well. It’s also possible she is starting to test her boundaries and where she fits in the pack hierarchy. Since she can’t talk and tell you, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. If the veterinarian does not find any obvious source of pain, they may look into a bladder infection or anal gland infection as a cause for discomfort.
