Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 25 days old | 12 lbs

At what age do dogs come in heat? My pitbull is in heat and she can't urinate. She squats but nothing happens. What might be the problem?

Most dogs will have their first heat around 6 months of age. Smaller breeds may go into heat sooner than large breeds.
Aries may have a UTI (urinary tract infection). Symptoms include frequent urination, straining to urinate, foul smelling or bloody urine and a change in thirst or urination. You would need to have her physically examined by your veterinarian and submit a urine sample, for urinalysis and culture, to definitively diagnose a UTI.
