My female dog has blood in her pee, but isn't in heat. What's wrong?

Hi I just had a question about my female dog. She is about 1 year and 4 months old. I’ve notice that there is blood in her pee. What can this mean? She has been eating really good and seem to be good. She is also not swollen to be in her heat

This may be due to inflammation or infection in the urinary tract. Stones or crystals can also cause bloody urine.
Ideally, Mia should be physically examined by your veterinarian. Abdominal x-rays may be indicated along with a urinalysis and urine culture. If necessary, your vet may dispense an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory.

When blood is coming out of the vulva in an unspayed dog, it can be coming from either the uterus or the bladder. So, the blood may be from her being in heat but since it is actually coming out with the urine it is more likely that the problem is in the bladder. With heat, they usually just leave blood drops where they are laying, walking, etc. They are not urinating out blood while in heat. She could have a UTI, bladder stones, cystitis, etc. I suggest you have her examined by your vet and have a urine test done.

Also, when they are in heat, the vulva is very swollen. If he vulva is not swollen then she is probably not in heat.

No, this is not normal. You need to take Harper into a vet asap to have this checked out. It could be she has a pyometra, which is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. If she does have a pyometra, spaying her is part of the recommended treatment. Best of luck.

Some young female dogs can have recessed or hooded vulvas, which can make them more prone to developing urinary tract infections. However, since Tilly’s urine has twice not shown evidence of infection, it sounds as though it’s time to look in a different direction. I would start by asking your vet if they can take x-rays of her abdomen to check for evidence of bladder stones. The crystals associated with bladder stones often show up on a urinalysis (I’m assuming that’s what was done with her urine samples), but not always. If the X-rays are clear, your next step may be an ultrasound of her bladder with a veterinary radiologist to check for any other abnormalities. Why is my unspayed female dog peeing blood, possibly bladder stones?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If she has bladder stones, she needs to have them removed because they will irritate the lining of the bladder causing bleeding and other complications. Once the stones are removed, they can have them tested to determine what kind of stones they are and can put Puffy on a special diet to help prevent them from forming again. I would also recommend having her spayed at the same time to prevent a life-threatening infection that can occur within the uterus causing her to need emergency surgery. There is a chance the blood in the urine is coming from her uterus but if a vet saw stones in the bladder, that is more likely. Good luck and kisses to Puffy!

I recommend calling your veterinarian in the morning and scheduling an appointment to have her looked at. There could be a few different reasons for blood in the urine. She can have a urinary tract infection, bladder stones, a kidney issue or even a bladder mass. I would recommend bringing a urine sample to have them evaluate it and see if Trinity has a urinary tract infection. Has she been in heat recently? At her age with not being spayed I would worry about thisbdisxharge being from the uterus and her having an uterine infection. This can be an emergency that typically requires surgery. Often times they are weak, drinking more water, vomiting and not eating. Other options include a bladder infection which will need antibiotics. Your vet can distguish between the two and see what is needed

My dog has bloody urine and isn't eating or playing. What should I do?

Bloody urine in an uneutered male dog could be caused by stones in the bladder or lower urinary tract, or prostatic or bladder infections. Scrappy would need to be evaluated by a veterinarian for a diagnosis and treatment. And give that he is feeling so badly I would take him in right away. They will likely collect a urine sample and may visualize the bladder and prostate with X-rays or an ultrasound.
