Why is my dog pooping hard with blood, but still eating and drinking?

Tucker could be suffering from some constipation causing the blood in his feces and the small pieces, or he could have intestinal parasites. I would recommend making sure his deworming treatments are up to date. I will give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps with his feces. I recommend giving him a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) mixed in with his food to see if that helps. If after 24-48 hours, he still have small pieces of poop with blood around it, then I would take him into the vet for an exam.

It's not normal to have blood in the stool, and if Lola didn't go at all yesterday and her stool is currently hard, it could be that she has constipation. Constipation can be caused by anal sac impaction, intestinal parasites, a foreign body, too little fiber in the diet, lack of exercise, or even tumors in the GI tract. This sounds like she is constipated. When the poop is very large or firm it can irritate the recal lining causing a small amount of blood on the poop. I would stop the new treats just in case, and add a tablespoon of plain canned pumpkin to each feeding to increase the fiber in her diet and make the stool softer so it will pass more easily, If she isn’t able go poop then she may need an enema at your veterinarian’s office. It sounds like he has soft stool or diarrhea, which makes dogs strain to defecate as the irritation and inflammation of the rectal area makes them feel like they have to go. This can also cause the rupture of tiny blood vessels in the rectal area, which may cause the red liquid you are seeing. I don't recommend giving him anything over the counter, but if he is acting okay otherwise and not vomiting, you might consider withholding food for the evening and then try feeding him boiled chicken with rice to see if his stool will firm up. If he still has the soft stool and straining tomorrow, I highly recommend bringing him to the vet. At the vet's office, they will examine him, take his temperature, and likely check his stool for parasites, which can cause soft stool. They may also recommend an abdominal x-ray. Hi, sorry to hear about these problems with your pup. First I would consider changing his food onto something for a dog with a sensitive stomach and se if that helps at all. Blood in firm stool can indicate straining so it's possible the food has too much fiber in it and is making his stool too hard. You can try a prescription diet made by Hill's called ID which is for dogs with sensitive stomachs. Also, you might want to look into an abdominal ultrasound or endoscopy to check for Inflammatory bowel disease. I don't think X rays will show up with much, i would go straight to the ultrasound. If they see anything suspicious, during endoscopy they can take biopsies. But then again, if he's not bothered by it in any way and keep on weight with a good appetite, it may just be food related or something he will grow out of. I would monitor him for those signs and pursue more diagnostics if you see them. Good luck, I hope this helps!

I would fast Charlie for 24 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. You can also add canned pumpkin to help with retaining moisture in the feces and so soften them. The blood is likely caused by pushing hard poop scratching on the surface of the rectum. Make sure he drinks enough water. Should the constipation not improve within the next two or three days then you need to see your veterinarian for an exam and an enema.

As long as he is eating and drinking, acting normally, the stool is formed and he is not vomiting, just keep a close eye on him. Im not sure if you are saying that he has been eating pebbles (small rocks) or if that was a typo and you meant kibble, but if he's been eating small rocks those could be causing some irritation to his rectum and anus when he's pooping. Obviously the other issue is that if the rocks are big enough they could cause a blockage in his intestine, so rocks of all sizes should be avoided. Again as long as there are no other symptoms this is not urgent; however, if you notice it still tomorrow, call your vet and make an appointment.
