My dog pooped blood after eating hotdogs and rocks. What should I do?

I'm sorry that Azazel isn't feeling well! Bloody stools in a young dog can be caused by IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, or much less commonly a growth or trauma. Eating a large amount of his normal food would not, by itself, cause bloody stools. If his stool looks like raspberry jam, I would recommend taking him to the vet or an emergency clinic right away. If there are just streaks of blood on the outside of his bowel movements, and he's actually totally normal (eating, drinking, good energy, has pink gums) it's not an emergency just yet. In that case, I would recommend feeding him a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice and giving him a day to see if it resolves. If after a second day (so 48 hours total) he's still have blood stool or is having diarrhea, it would be wise to have him checked out at your regular vet. Bring a fresh stool sample to any vet you end up seeing so they can check him for intestinal parasites. Wishing you and Azazel the best of luck! Blood in the feces can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. Blood in the poop can be from intestinal parasites, polpys or a mass, irritation of the intestines from eating bones, intestinal inflammation or from infected anal sacs. With one episode I’m not overly concerned about it as long as your dog is acting normal. If it continues I recommend a fecal test, have the anal sacs expressed, and palpate for a mass in the rectum. Hello, sorry to hear about Pookie. It sounds like he is having some hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE). Occasionally this is self limiting and can be resolved with a bland diet for 3-5 days (plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken). However often, pets require medications and supportive care for the associated dehydration, vomiting, and diarrhea (with or without blood) that comes with this disease. If Pookie is not improving within a day, or if his diarrhea is worsening despite the bland diet, if he develops innapetence or vomiting, then he should be evaluated by his veterinarian promptly. If he’s otherwise normal you should be fine watching him tonight. He could have a ruptured anal abscess, or be passing a bone. He could also have a mass inside the rectum. Severe bloody diarrhea in a dog that is lethargic and not eating is a medical emergency but this sounds like he’s stable so bring him to your regular veterinarian in the morning so they can diagnose and treat his problem. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry that Ollies is having this problem. Ingesting bones is a very serious issue.... It is likely that the bones are scraping the lining of the large colon which is why you are seeing drops of blood. I don't think that performing an enema would assist in removing any of the bones. There may have been an impaction of stool that they cleared but I highly doubt any bones actually came out. Bones either have to be surgically removed or passed out through regular defecation. Were any x-rays taken to see where the bones were in the GI tract and how many? If not, I suggest you have that done so you know if you have to be worried about any bone remnants or not. This can be extremely serious as any sharp points on the bones could puncture the intestinal lining causing serious peritonitis and possibly death. If he is otherwise acting normally, don't be overly concerned about the blood drops. If he is eating OK I would feed him a couple slices of bread every 8-12 hours to help coat any bone fragments and help push them out. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

This can be from a mass in the rectum, irritation from pushing out hard stool, or she may have an anal infection causing the bleeding. If this continues I recommend a veterinary exam. They will check the anal sacs and palpate inside the rectum for a mass. Make sure the stool isn’t too firm. Adding fiber to the diet will bulk up the stool and make it easier to pass.
