What is this hard growth on my dog's skin? When should I see a vet?

Hello. From the pictures it is very hard to see what is going on with Maxx. I would recommend having the mass surgically removed and sent for histopathology to determine exactly what it is. Your vet will take as large margins as possible in case it is cancerous. It could be just a wart, or could be a parasite, however since there are multiple and growing I would suggest having it removed to determine exactly what it is. Good luck with Maxx!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! They look like keratin growths. The skin is made of keratin which is a protein and sometimes that protein is hard, like a nail. I recommend taking your pup to the vet to confirm but if that is what they are they are not serious. Kisses to your pup!

The veterinarian will collect a sample of cells and evaluate them under the microscope to diagnose the mass. A histiocytoma is a common benign growth on the extremities of young dogs. Unfortunately, a mast cell tumor is an aggressive cancerous growth that has the same outward appearance. This is why the cells need to be examined. I hope this information helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It's hard to make out where the white object attaches to her skin. Dog and cats can form keratinized horny growths on their skin. I recommend making an appointment with your Vet to have it removed. If it is small enough maybe they can remove it with a local block. I hope this helps and I wish you the best!

I would guess that Max's 'warts' might actually be skin growths known as adenomas, which are benign skin tumors that look very similar to a wart. Dogs can also develop contagious papillomas around their mouths, ears and feet which are more like typical warts but these are not as common. I would recommend making an appointment to see your veterinarian to have them take a look and determine whether or not there is any concern.

It would be a good idea to have Maximus examined by your veterinarian. These growths may be benign but there is a chance that they are getting infected and this is causing Maximus to bite at them. Unfortunately, it is also possible that that some of these growths could be cancerous. It sounds like your pet has a skin mass, which typically is not an emergency type of situation, especially if it isn’t bleeding or causing immense pain or discomfort for your pet.
