My dog has grey fluid discharge one day after mating. Is it normal?

This could be normal with nothing to worry about. If the discharge thickens, becomes yellow/green, or even a pink tinged color then I would be concerned about a vaginitis or pyometra. Pyometra could be life threatening if left untreated. If the clear discharge doesn't subside within a few days or if at any point she isn't acting right or stops eating, I would try to figure out a way for her to be seen by a vet. I would just be up front with the vet clinic about your cost concerns so they can be sure to get you an estimate and also come up with a plan that will suit both you and Freya's needs. Make sure she has water close by and see if she'll eat a biscuit. Often new mothers take a day or two to get their appetite back. Give her another day or so then if she still won't eat or drink then take her in. As far as the discharge goes it can be there for up to a week or so. If she stops nursing or the discharge has a foul odor then again I would bring her in for an exam. They may take an X-ray to make sure there are no more puppies and perhaps give her medication to contract the uterus to get rid of any fluid or afterbirth. When you say you saw a white discharge you do not indicate where you saw the discharge coming from. Since you discussed heat later in the question I assume you mean you saw discharge from the vulva. An occurrence small amount of whitish discharge can be a normal finding. However, if you are noticing a yellow or blood tinged discharge, if she is drinking more than usual, if she isn’t eating well or otherwise acting “sick” then I would be concerned. Pyometra is an infection of the uterus and can be fatal. So if you are concerned that you are seeing abnormal vaginal discharge then she should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is probably ok for now though it does indicate that there was some discharge and potentially an infection. I would recommend that you keep a very close eye on the incision site. If you notice any active discharge (moist instead of dry), bleeding or pain, have her evaluated as soon as possible to make sure it is not an active infection. Keep the area clean for now. If she was spayed over the weekend, this looks like a normal bit of discharge. It's not excessive and doesn't look there is any bright red blood in it. Since she is otherwise acting normally, it's fine to wait until 8am to give her vet a call, but I suspect they may say it's normal discharge. I hope this helps!

This can be a normal discharge. She will start to nest, not eat as much and have some milk from her nipples when she is about to give birth. Most dogs don't have trouble having puppies but it's best to keep a close eye on her with allowing her privacy in a quiet area. Good luck with the puppies. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I don't think anything is wrong per se. We sedate the females at my clinic for AI so we are sure that we are through the cervix and are doing it sterile. It could be normal that some fluid comes out. If it was a lot then I think you didn't get the straw through the cervix and I would worry that it won't take. Can you do the AI again with a Vet that does this routinely! I wish you the best!
