After dog birth: Is bloody discharge & not eating normal for mom?

My main recommendation is to check her temperature to make sure she does not have a fever (over 102.5). While it is normal for the temperature to rise for the first 24 hours after whelping, by now it should return to normal. If she does have a fever or the vaginal discharge has a foul smell, is increasing in volume, or she seems to be feeling any worse, then take her to the veterinarian. If you have a house call veterinarian in your area, that would be even better. Infection of the uterus, or metritis, is possible and should be taken seriously. At two days post-whelping, a reddish brown discharge is normal. If she has no fever and seems to be feeling better, then just make sure she has plenty to eat and lots of fresh water. As I said before, the discharge may be normal. It is called lochia. Please refer to this article for more information. ( https://whelpingpuppies.com/how-long-a-dog-bleeds-after-giving-birth/ ) I only mentioned taking her to a vet because you stated she delivered a dead puppy 12 hours after the first two. If you are saying she is hot then she may have a fever. If you don't want to take her to a vet that is up to you. I can't tell you anymore than this without examining the dog myself. Feeding milk to a nursing dog is not recommended. Dogs at her age do not need milk and it is not going to do anything to boost the milk she gives the puppies. If she is eating a good dog food you don't need to give anything else.

Be sure that Eris is eating and drinking approriately. She should be eating a high quality puppy food. She should have a small amount of vaginal discharge post birth but make sure there is not a large amount of blood or pass in the lochia. If possible you may want to take her temperature rectally, normal is 101-102.5. Also be sure the pups are latching on and nursing well that they don't appear sick or restless. If anything else is abnormal be on the whining I would recommend a veterinary visit for the whole crew just to make sure mom doesn't have a uterine infection, mastitis, or other complication of having puppies Good luck and I hope they all do well.

The diarrhea could be related to eating the placentas and afterbirth, or could be a sign of another disease like intestinal parasites. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian for a physical exam and to discuss treatment for the diarrhea. While it's possible simple change like a bland diet and probiotic would be recommended it's always best to have a veterinarian take a look to make sure there's nothing more serious going on.

After the delivery, your dog may leak fluids and discharge for several weeks. This discharge is called lochia, and its color may be a shade of red. Lochia should be odorless -- if it has an unpleasant smell, contact your vet, as an odor indicates infection. Otherwise, general intermittent bleeding around the vulva may continue for weeks or, in some cases, months. If you notice that your dog is actually still bleeding a few days after birth, contact your vet. While it may be normal, you need to rule out complications like postpartum hemorrhage, which can result from poor blood clotting.

Hello. This is a normal discharge called lochia. It is the remains of the uterine lining being expelled & this may continue for up to 12 weeks after a bitch gives birth. I am very sorry to hear that you are experiencing these issues with Gretal. There are many conditions which can affect the recently postpartum female dog including exhaustion, infection, trauma, hypoglycaemia, severe blood loss causing anemia, and mastitis. Watch for collapse, lethargy, pale gums, dry gums, vomiting, diarrhoea, Loss of blood, complete loss of appetite or the signs of mastitis. Mastitis is a bacterial infection of one, or sometimes more then one, of the milk producing glands in the breasts. Other clinical signs would be; Swelling Firm Warm Discharge (other then milk) painful to the touch Loss of appetite Lethargy Neglect of puppies If you notice any of the above clinical signs, or suspect that Gretal could have mastitis, based on the above clinical signs I would suggest that you take her to see a veterinarian. The vet will be able to prescribe an antibiotics antiinflamatory medications and pain relief. In the meantime you can apply a cool compress to the affected area. Do not attempt any over the counter medications or ointments as they may cause pain or delay healing. It is fine for Gretal to eat only wet food as this will rehydrate her. Low sodium broth should be used. Try a bland diet of boiled boneless chicken breast and steamed white rice. The broth that the chicken is cooked with can be added to her food for extra hydration.
