My dog has green eye boogers and crusty eyes. When should I see a vet?

Dogs can get eye infections, allergies that lead to infections, scratches on the cornea and dry eye. These will all lead to increased eye discharge. Maverick’s discharge looks slightly green from the photos and this is generally indicative of an infection. If the green discharge lasts longer than 24hours, he seems uncomfortable, he is rubbing at the eye or he is squinting, he needs to see the veterinarian. The main reason is that greenish discharge can also be observed with things like a corneal ulcer or conjunctivitis for example. Your veterinarian could check for this and treat accordingly. This can be due to allergies, irritation to the eye, or an infection. However if it's just seen in the morning and her eyes are not red swollen, or otherwise abnormal in appearance, then this can be normally seen. In order to tell for sure if this is a problem, a vet would need to examine the eye. If this problem is recent, or has gotten worse, then it would be best to have a vet evaluate her. If this is something that has always happened, then it's more likely to be normal. I hope that helps and all is well with Pearl.

If the eye is not too uncomfortable and the only abnormality is the green discharge she should be ok to wait until Saturday. However if she is in pain, pawing at the eye or squinting, best to have the eye checked over sooner rather than later.

Green discharge from the eyes usually means infection so she will likely need antibiotics to get this to clear up. In the meantime you can use this over the counter eye flush to help. That is pretty significant discharge that Nola has around her eyes. This is likely secondary to an infection (eye or upper respiratory) or even an allergy. It would be best to have Nola examined by a veterinarian because she may need medicated eye drops or even an oral antibiotic to treat the eyes. It's always better to have a dog seen if there are eye issues going on as it can progress to more serious issues quickly. You may use a sterile saline solution to rinse Nola's eyes but I don't think that will resolve the issue. So again, it's really the best idea to have Nola evaluated by your veterinarian. At least in these pictures, his cornea appears affected. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment.
