Considering adopting a puppy with genetic mange: Is it curable?

If it was for demodex mange then it can never be cured. They can always have flare ups since it is a hereditary problem. Typically once you get it under control, the hair will fill back in. If they get sick or stressed then they can have a flare up. I would have him rechecked to see about continuing the medicine

Sarcoptic mange usually causes hair loss and thick crusts on the tips of the ears, elbows and hocks (ankles) along with extreme itchiness. Demodectic mange usually just causes small patches of hair loss, although secondary skin infections could lead to skin redness and itchiness. I'm not super familiar with Happy Jack, but it looks like it's a sulfur based dip which is probably not toxic but is not the most effective treatment for either type of mite. I would see if any of the potential adoptive families would be willing to help out with a veterinary bill so you can start some prescription medications (that are also a lot less messy and time consuming than dips).

If it is a local demodex and resolves fully, you can likely still breed her. However, if she does not respond well to treatment or continues to have it as an adult I would not breed her. I hope this helps!

He sounds like a great dog! Demodectic mange is easy to treat. I don't find that it means that their general immune system is affected at all. It is just to this one mite. I don't see it associated with other immune system problems. They may have problems with demodex again when they are geriatric, but I only saw that rarely (associated with other diseases). There is no guarantee for any animal's health, but I would certainly not consider demdodex as a deal breaker. I would adopt a demdodex dog if it was the right fit for my family! Sarcoptic mange is highly contagious to other pets and even humans. The treatment can take as long as six weeks for your puppy to respond completely and, until then, I recommend limiting your exposure to her and quarantining her away from any other pets until she is recovered.

Is the mange currently being treated with an oral product such as Nexgard, Bravecto, Simparica or Credelio? Demodex mites are found on virtually all dogs, but it does take a suppressed immune system for them to overpopulate and cause an infection. If the mange is already being treated and your own dog is otherwise healthy, the risk *should* be fairly low. Unfortunately not. Mange has to be diagnosed by a vet by looking for the mites under a microscope. It is then treated with prescription medication and the vet will need to ensure the infestation is all clear before discontinuing treatment. It's also best to have a vet evaluate him, because it's possible that Cinnamon could have another condition besides mange.
