My puppy had demodex. Can she still be bred safely as an adult?

I recommend to confirm it is demodex mange with your veterinarian. Off label treatments with some of the oral flea preventatives can help. Also, if she is not spayed, it will be very hard to get rid of the mites. I recommend to have Blonca spayed if this is not already done as there are many health and behavioral benefits. Mara needs the medications to treat the mites. Some dogs do need lifetime treatment. The good news is that many dogs will respond to the new oral flea and tick medications such as Nexgard and bravecto which may clear or keep demodex in check. Mara should also be spayed- demodex has a genetic component so she should not have puppies but beyond this each heat cycle stresses her immune system and makes an outbreak more likely. Grain free is not necessary, while it shouldn't hurt her it is a marketing gimmick by food companies and not based on medical research. Generic mange, demodex, cannot be cured. However with appropriate treatment you can get rid of all the symptoms and never know she had it. As shebages, she does have potential to exhibit the signs again ifbshe gets sick or stressed but it is easy to control. It is not contagious and these puppies do very well. I would.l not let this stop you from getting her!!

The puppies can get the Demodex mites as they are born. If their immune system becomes compromised, the mites can grow out of control and start causing the symptoms that we see. The best you can do is try to keep the puppies clean and healthy and hope that they don't get it this time.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Twerp! If Twerp has demodex, it will not be a "one size fits all" treatment. Classically demodex was treated with oral ivermectin which is dosed based on the animals weight. It is a higher dose of ivermectin than is in heartgard and is off label use of the drug. It works well and the dog tends to be on it for several months until 2-3 negative skin scrapings. Now a days we have found that the oral flea and tick medications have an added "perk" of also killing demodex. You just give the monthly oral dose like it is labeled to give for flea and ticks and by 3 months the fur usually has grown back and the mites are gone. Nexgard, Simparica and Bravecto are the oral medication that can do this and again are based on the weight of the dog. I hope this helps and I wish Twerp the best!

There is definitely an improvement, it can take several months until the skin recovers completely, just continue the treatment and i would also recommend using Bravecto tablet, this also treats demodex and will help restore the skin.

I would recommend having your veterinarian recheck Bella and make sure that she does not still have demodex. Your veterinarian will have to look under the microscope again to make sure.
