My puppy had mange. Why is he losing hair around his eyes again?

Hi and thanks for your post. Demodex mite infection can be occur in younger dogs and may spontaneously resolve as their immune system becomes more mature. Demodex mange is not typically itchy but sarcoptic mange is. The area of hair loss around the eye in the picture does look suspicious of demodex mange but you will want to get this confirmed with your veterinarian first. A skin test in needed to accurately diagnosis demodex manage in dogs. If it is demodex, unfortunately, there is nothing over the counter at tractor supply you can purchase for this. You veterinarian may give you a prescription medication for the mange if necessary. Either types of manage (demodex or sarcoptic) typically is not fatal unless there is a more serious underlying condition at play. Both types are treatable.

I would recommend having your veterinarian recheck Bella and make sure that she does not still have demodex. Your veterinarian will have to look under the microscope again to make sure. This is most commonly a sign of mange in a puppy this age. Many times, this actually resolves on its own, but sometimes treatment is needed to keep it from getting worse. I recommend taking Taiko to the vet sometime in the next day or two. They will be able to examine her and provide treatment if necessary. I hope that helps and Taiko gets better soon.

Sometimes it takes more than one round of treatment to treat mites. If your dog has demodectic mange your veterinarian will have to look at the underlying cause of the repeated outbreak as demodextic mange usually lies dormant until the dog has a compromised immune system. If it is sarcoptes mange then your dog may have reinfected himself. Your veterinarian can prescribe Bravecto, a chew that covers fleas, ticks and all types of mange, even demodectic mange.

Generic mange, demodex, cannot be cured. However with appropriate treatment you can get rid of all the symptoms and never know she had it. As shebages, she does have potential to exhibit the signs again ifbshe gets sick or stressed but it is easy to control. It is not contagious and these puppies do very well. I would.l not let this stop you from getting her!!

Puppies are at risk for mites like demodex, ring worm, bacterial infections. I would recommend an exam with your vet and a skin scrape to look for mites. Some mites are contagious to people like sarcoptic mange. Some mites are not. Hope that helps

An allergy would likely cause more general symptoms instead of affecting just one area. Discuss any additional medications with your vet before given any. An e-collar (cone) should be used to prevent pawing. If current therapy is ineffective, consider a recheck with your veterinarian or veterinary ophthalmologist.
