My dog has diarrhea, vomiting, pain. Can I give human medicine?

Vomiting and diarrhea together is commonly referred to as gastroenteritis. There can be several causes for gastroenteritis including pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites and a foreign body/blockage. Since Jose has been so sick for several days I would recommend taking him to the vet to be evaluated. Your vet may recommend blood work and X-rays to figure out what exactly is going on. I would not recommend giving the antacid st this time since we do not know the cause of the problem. Medicating unnecessarily could cause more harm than good. Best of luck.

I’m so sorry to hear about Murphy! Unfortunately these cases are hard because we don’t know what the underlying cause is. Does gastric distress include vomiting and diarrhea or just vomiting? Possible next steps might be a parvo test, bloodwork (including a pancreatitis check), or an abdominal ultrasound. Unfortunately, It could be a toxin, an anaphylactoid reaction, or several other things that are not easy to diagnose. Certainly symptomatic care with anti nausea medication, anti-diarrheal medication, and IV or subcutaneous (under the skin) fluids are the mainstay of treatment for these types of symptoms regardless of cause. Head into the emergency vet if Murphy had vomited more than twice or if he seems listless, weak, or mentally dull. Best of luck to you and Murphy!

He could have an infection or a parasite causing the vomiting and diarrhea. He should be examined by a vet for treatment. Your vet can test a fecal sample to determine if he has a parasite and then prescribe medications to help treat the problem.

There are lots of things that could cause vomiting and diarrhea in a dog, including dietary intolerance or indiscretion, food allergy, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection, IBD, pancreatitis, among others. If it persists for 24 hours or if Oscar seems lethargic, I would recommend having him seen by a vet where you are vacationing.

I'm sorry to hear about Shadow! The stretching and pacing is a sign of abdominal pain. This could be something as simple as gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines) caused by eating something naughty. This may be especially true if he only vomited a few times and has since stopped. However, this could also be something very serious such as pancreatitis or an intestinal blockage (especially worrisome if he is known to eat toys, socks, rocks, or other non-food items). If he is not fully vaccinated, parvovirus is also a life-threatening possibility. Because of these possibilities, I strongly recommend you see your vet. Vomiting and diarrhea can be caused by many conditions primarily gastrointestinal in nature such gastroenteritis and gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction or other conditions such as pancreatitis or kidney disease. I recommend that you have your pup evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include abdominal imaging and general bloodwork. You could try a bland diet composed mainly of boiled chicken and white rice which is easily digestible and can help with an upset stomach. Good luck and have a great day!

Oh my. Poor guy. If he has a fever this can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection (i.e. Parvovirus if he isn't fully vaccinated). I would have him tested for parvovirus first and if that comes up negative he needs full panel bloodwork and a urinalysis. to fully evaluate him. He should be on antibiotics and fluid therapy to help bring down his fever. He also needs anti-vomit medication to prevent him from becoming dehydrated due to excessive vomiting. If his condition has not improved within 24-48 hrs, then you should consider having him hospitalized so that he can get around the clock care and treatment. Poor guy. I do hope that your pup Shadow is able to make a full and speedy recovery from his illness. For tonight you can try feeding him some slghly warmed up cans of baby food (meat and vegetables or squash) to try to entice him to eat. Only a small amount at a time to hopefully not induce his vomiting. Best wishes and take care.
