My 4-year-old Rottweiler has gas. What dog food should I switch to?

Puppy chow is the recommended food for a seven week old puppy, but quality is very important as well. A low quality food would give Rowdy gas. Gas could also be caused by intestinal worms, which can give him bad breath as well. Intestinal worms are very common in puppies, and if Rowdy isn't up to date on his deworming treatments, I would give him Panacur which you can get OTC. Hiccups occur when a puppy eats too fast, and I would give him a little bit of food at a time during his meal time to slow down his eating. In terms of food, I would feed him a high quality puppy food such as Royal Canin or Hills Science diet.

Yes, there are different brands of food you can try for Thumper. I recommend Royal Canin, Purina ProPlan, Hill's Science Diet, or Iams. Purina One is also a good brand of supermarket food. At his age, he should be fed three times a day so you are doing that correctly! As for the amount, the bag will list how much food he should get daily, so use that as a guideline for feeding him and divide it into three equal portions. Make sure as well he is up to date on his deworming treatments because that can make him gassy as well. Should you decide to switch foods, do it slowly so avoid GI upset. Mix together the new food and the old, and over the course of two weeks, gradually increase the amount of new food and decrease the amount of old food until he is eating the new food only. If this is the only sign you could try changing to a highly digestible diet (like Hill’s i/d or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Low Fat) as long as she doesn’t have any food intolerances or diseases requiring a therapeutic diet. Sometimes I also have people try a probiotic like Fortiflora. If she has also had a decrease in appetite, diarrhea or weight loss you should see your veterinarian.

I recommend the brand Royal Canin. It has a very nice fiber blend that tends to help with gas. Murry would get the medium breed (I believe). Get the formula that is for his weight. It comes in canned and dry. I hope this helps.

Yes, you are correct that the change in diet can cause Quincey to have this gas. It was an excellent idea to bring him to the vet for a health check, and I'm glad she said everything looked ok. I think it's also an excellent idea to feed him the Royal Canin gastro for the next few days. If that helps with his gas, I would slowly add back in his diet. As for his diet, I'd recommend going back to the Royal Canin. I'm not sure why you would switch foods, but it does seem like the new diet doesn't agree with his stomach, and unless you want to deal with a lot of farts, I'd put him back on a food that doesn't give him gas :-)

Excessive flatulence can have several causes. If Cujo eats fast, he may be swallowing a lot of air which has to come out eventually from either end. Divide his meals into smaller, more frequent portions or use a "slow feed" bowl to regulate his eating. You can also raise the bowls to prevent or limit air swallowing. Parasites can also be the cause. You can submit a stool sample to your vet to diagnose intestinal parasites. Diet plays a large role as well. Feed a premium diet, preferably grain free. These diets are more easily digested and the lack of grains decreases possible fermentation in the gut. You can also consider a probiotic such as ProViable or ProStora to promote gut health.
