What to feed my 7-week Rottie pup with gas, bad breath, and hiccups?

Great question! The brands I like include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Iams is an excellent, affordable food which I feed to my own dogs. They love it. If you want a supermarket brand, Purina One is the best. Should you switch Brooklyn's diet, be sure to do it slowly to avoid GI upset. I hope this helps!

Feed the highest quality food you can afford, since this will help prevent illness in the future and save money on vet bills in the long run. The bad news is it sounds like he's training you they way he wants you, the good news is you can correct his behavior. Dogs can go without eating for a few days without any detrimental effects, unlike cats. So, to convince him he needs to eat his food, offer his puppy food in two to three meals a day. Read the directions on the bag or can for guidelines on how much to feed per day and divide that into however many meals you need to. You can offer dry, canned or a combination. It may help him transition if you offer him some canned food with the dry, and/or moisten the dry with some low-sodium chicken broth to entice him to eat. Try to keep him on a regular a schedule as you can. Put his food down in the morning and give him 20 minutes to eat it. If he doesn't eat it, take it up, and put it away for the next meal. Only give him treats for doing something, such as training or going potty outside, and only a few. You don't want to have him rely on treats as a meal. When it's time for the next meal, put his food down, give him 20 minutes. When he gets hungry enough, usually after a day or so, he'll eat. Don't feed him anything off the table either. If he begs and you feel you have to give him something, keep a bowl of his kibble on the table and give him that. Most dogs think it's fantastic because it came off the table from you.

At his age, he should be fed three times a day so you are doing that correctly! As for the amount, the bag will list how much food he should get daily, so use that as a guideline for feeding him and divide it into three equal portions. Make sure as well he is up to date on his deworming treatments because that can make him gassy as well. Should you decide to switch foods, do it slowly so avoid GI upset. Mix together the new food and the old, and over the course of two weeks, gradually increase the amount of new food and decrease the amount of old food until he is eating the new food only. These types of diets contain the appropriate vitamins and minerals (calcium and phosphorus in particular) to ensure that growth occurs at an appropriate rate. The treats you are feeding are fine as long as they are in concert with an appropriately formulated primary diet. If you find that Bones is eating less food or having some sort of dietary upset, you can certainly change to a different type. Just if you do this, make sure it is done over the course of at least one week. This will reduce the likelihood of any significant diarrhea or vomiting during the transition period. Hope this helps!

It sounds as Harry is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am not sure I am reading this right but I will try to clarify what I think you mean. Prince should be fed a large breed puppy food. In the States, giant breed is for mastiffs and Great Danes so large breed is perfect for a Rottweiler. Royal Canin makes excellent puppy and dog food. At 5 weeks he can definitely have puppy food as long as he has teeth. You may need to water down the dry food to make it softer for him to chew. These foods are designed for young puppies until about 1 year of age. It has the proper blend of vitamins and minerals to help his body and organs grow. I would continue to feed the Royal Canin. In the States we call biscuits “treats”, so as long as you mean biscuits is food and not treats you should be all set. I hope this helps. Good luck and kisses to Prince!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Since you are bottle feeding I would start to wean sooner than if she was nursing from her mom. Milk replacers tend to either constipate or cause diarrhea. Since she is having loose stools I would have a fecal tested at the vet for parasites. Coccidia is common in puppies. By 2 weeks of age you can start dewormning with pyrantel pamoate every 2 weeks. Starting at 4-5 weeks offer canned puppy food and milk replacer twice daily. At 5-6 weeks mix canned with dry puppy food and bottle feed once daily and by 6-7 weeks just dry and off the bottle by then. Once stool a day is not enough. I would buy a different brand of milk replacer and mix with what you are using now to get a better consistency for the stool. 2.5 lbs=40 ounces, so you should be feeding 50 mls every 3-4 hours or 350 mls per day. I would divide that out every 4-6 hours and see how things go and start weaning in the next 1-2 weeks. I hope this helps!
