My dog gags and dry heaves daily. Is it gas or something serious?

Jake may have esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus) from all of the stomach acid in his vomit. Unfortunately, without an exam we cannot give specific medication recommendations. Common medications used in esophagitis are antacids and gastroprotectants. Also, feeding soft food and lots of water will help with irritation. If Jake continues to gag and he is not eating normally, he should really see a vet as there can be more serious issues going on like intestinal obstruction, esophageal strictures, ongoing acid reflux, etc.

I would have Jake seen by a vet today for this. It is concerning that he hasn't eaten in two days, and this foul smelling gas could be caused by a foreign body or eating something spoiled. The vet can diagnose what is causing his symptoms so he can be treated. Please take Jake into a vet today.

It sounds like Biggy (love his name!) is nauseous and may be dry heaving. This sounds most like an intestinal issue to me, but take a quick look in the roof of his mouth to make sure there isn't a toy or stick stuck there. He could have a foreign body, a functional or mechanical blockage, irritation from intestinal worms or eating some different/bad, stress, toxin, or other issue. If he looks like he's trying to throw up and nothing happens, I would recommend taking him an emergency clinic for an exam and x-rays. If he's not retching and he's eating, it may not be an emergency, but I would want him to be evaluated first thing on Tuesday. Any change in appetite, vomiting or trying to vomit, diarrhea, or lethargy means he needs to go sooner. I hope Biggy is back to normal soon!

It sounds like Romeo has a few different issues going on - watery eyes, possible fever, vomiting or gagging. This doesn't point to any particular disease, but definitely makes me want to have him go in to the vet for evaluation. It sounds like Maximus may have a respiratory infection such as kennel cough, which often causes coughing and gagging without anything coming up. Or, he could be feeling nauseous and trying to vomit - if his stomach is empty, sometimes this gagging can be non-productive. If he is acting normal otherwise and this problem just started today, you can try withholding food for the rest of the day and offering a small amount of plain boiled chicken and rice this evening to help settle his stomach. If this doesn't help, or if he continues to have repeated episodes of coughing or gagging throughout the day, then I would recommend having him examined by a vet - he/she can determine whether Maximus has a respiratory infection or a stomach problem and get him started on appropriate medication to treat it.

Poor Max! I agree that this sounds as if he has something either lodged in his mouth (typically the roof of the mouth) or further down his respiratory tract. Open his mouth carefully and look to see if you can visualize anything there first. If you don't see anything and he continues this behavior for more than an hour or so, then it's time to get him examined by your local vet. If he continues to comit uncontrollably (once or more an hour), then he needs to go to the ER vet right away! At that point, radiographs taken of his upper airway would be the ideal diagnostic test to finding out what is truly going on there, and what specific treatment or intervention is needed to help poor Max out and get him some relief right away.

If you suspect Jake ate a foreign body or he is showing signs of illness such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, painful or tender abdomen, severe bloating of the abdomen, or bloody vomit or diarrhea, it is best to bring him into your vet ASAP. They can examine him and check for any possible foreign bodies that may be causing an obstruction or other issues.
