It sounds like Biggy (love his name!) is nauseous and may be dry heaving. This sounds most like an intestinal issue to me, but take a quick look in the roof of his mouth to make sure there isn't a toy or stick stuck there. He could have a foreign body, a functional or mechanical blockage, irritation from intestinal worms or eating some different/bad, stress, toxin, or other issue.

If he looks like he's trying to throw up and nothing happens, I would recommend taking him an emergency clinic for an exam and x-rays. If he's not retching and he's eating, it may not be an emergency, but I would want him to be evaluated first thing on Tuesday. Any change in appetite, vomiting or trying to vomit, diarrhea, or lethargy means he needs to go sooner.

Poor Biggy! If he looks like he is in distress or if his gums are grey or purple then he could have something stuck in his trachea and not getting enough oxygen. This is a medical emergency and I would take him to your local emergency clinic now. If his gums are still pink and he is still eating normally and acting normal other that the coughing/gagging, he could have some allergies or an upper respiratory infection. Dogs don’t commonly get hair balls but it is possible. You could try some Benadryl to see if this helps (see link below). If he isn’t improving, I would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able to listen to his heart and lungs and even do X-rays if needed. Your vet will be able get him started on some antibiotics and even some medicine to help with the cough and help him feel better. I hope this helps!

It sounds like your dog was nauseous, and dogs can lick things when they are nauseous. I can give you a home remedy for the vomiting to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. It sounds like Patron is licking constantly because he feels nauseous. This can definitely be caused by a foreign body or obstruction as well as other causes of intestinal upset (such as pancreatitis, parasites, or dietary indiscretion). I recommend having him seen by a vet to determine exactly what is making him nauseous, and receive fluids and anti-nausea medications if necessary. I hope this helps and wish you and Oatron well!

Because of the vomiting, I recommend getting your pet checked by your vet as soon as possible. Continued vomiting is very concerning and can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance as well as low blood sugar. He might have eaten something that either disagreed with him or something that has gotten stuck somewhere in his gastrointestinal tract. He could be sore from a hidden injury you are unaware of, he could have been exposed to some sort of toxin or irritant in his environment or this could be early signs of another condition or disease process. Your pet may need IV fluids to help support his/her system and to be fasted at the same time in order to give the gut a rest. Your vet can do an exam, blood work and possibly x-rays to determine the cause of the illness and suggest an effective treatment plan.

My dog keeps gagging, licking, and won't eat. What's the problem?

I am sorry that Dixie is so sick. In this type of situation I am still usually very suspicious of an intestinal foreign object. There is one area on the x-Ray that is a little suspicious to me. Make sure to look under her tongue for any thread or string caught. I would typically recommend either a barium series or an abdominal ultrasound at this time. Occasionally exploratory surgery is recommended if we can’t find another answer . Best of luck and I hope she improves soon.

My dog is gagging and threw up grass. Why is he still gagging?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like Auggie could have either some nausea or had something caught in his throat. Reasons a dog might vomit or retch (the gagging without producing anything) include eating something new/different, toxin, infection, organ disease, cancer, or other. If he’s just vomited once, pick up the food and water and monitor. Reintroduce water 4 hours after the vomiting episode and a small meal 12 hours after vomiting episode. If Auggie has vomited several times, it’s time to head to the ER clinic. The veterinarian will do a good physical exam and may recommend x-rays and/or bloodwork to help narrow down the cause of the vomiting. They can also treat the nausea and administer fluids for any dehydration that has occurred. Best wishes to you and Auggie!

My dog ate a clothing tag, puked, and is licking carpet. Is he okay?

He may be experiencing symptoms of having a gastrointestinal obstruction though other things like dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, among other things could also be going on. For this reason, I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible to ensure that this does not become worse and to see if he will require therapy such as surgery if he is in fact having an obstruction. You can try offering him some wet dog food formed into a meatball to see if this helps push anything in his throat along. If the gagging continues or you are ever worried about how well Biko is breathing, I recommend having Biko seen by a veterinarian for an exam. Your vet may recommend chest x-rays to see if Biko has any primary lung issues or reasons for the gagging. I hope this is helpful!
