My senior dog takes Gabapentin & Trazodone. Can I give both at night?

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | neutered | 15 years old | 51 lbs

Hello, I have a 16 year old Siberian Husky. He is approx 50lbs and has been dealing with DM which has progressed to affecting all extremities (he is somewhat ambulatory, but its very limited) as well as doggie dementia My vet wrote an RX for gabapentin 300mg and Trazodone 100mg - each for a different reason...the gabapentin for pain, and the trazodone for the sundowning issues he has been having at night. Is it okay for me to give them both at night...I worry about over sedating him.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Duke. I'm sorry that he's been struggling lately, how hard for him and you. You can use the gabapentin and trazadone together. Yes, they can cause increased sedation together, but that may be a good thing if he's sundowning. It will help him sleep and keep him on a regular schedule. I hope this helps!

Can I give my dog gabapentin, prednicare, and tramadol together?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. While I usually use either gabapentin or tramadol, either one can be safely used with the prednisone. But tramadol can be used in conjunction with the gabapentin and a non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication ( or pred ) for chronic pain conditions. Take care.

Unfortunately no you cannot. Trazodone can only be given once every 24 hours and gabapentin every 8 hours. Giving Yogi these pills three and a half hours after the first time you gave them is too close.

It is safe to give these medications together and they are often prescribed for sedation. The sedation typically lasts 12-24 hours. Hello. Most times you can give Anipryl along with Trazodone safely. On occasion, if the doses were/are high enough with both drugs, you might see serotonin syndrome. I am sure your veterinarian is quite aware of the doses used & is confident that Mitch will be fine. Can my older dog safely take Gabapentin, Tramadol, Metacam daily?

If this was prescribed by your vet , then this is the amount of medicine he needs. Gabapentin may make him a bit drowsy in the beginning, but that should subside after about two weeks. Gabapentin is against nerve pain. Tramadol is an opioid which takes some pain as well and Metacam is a non-steroidal antiinflammatory which takes away inflammation and therefore also pain. These medicines are safe, however watch your dog's poo in the first two weeks. If it is black or tarry then stop the Metacam and inform your vet.
