Is it safe to give my cat trazodone & gabapentin for travel?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

Is it safe to give my 8 month old kitten 50mg of trazodone and 100mg of gabapentin?I was prescribed this because my cat has explosive diarrhea when traveling and the vet said these two medicines should work.I can't find any information on combining the two medicines, I don't want to give her too much or overdose her. I already feel bad that I am drugging her up, but I want her to be safe while traveling. How long does it take for the sedation to wear off?Can I give her a dose Thursday and Monday?

It is safe to give these medications together and they are often prescribed for sedation. The sedation typically lasts 12-24 hours. You could ask your vet about trying the medications before you travel to make sure the level of sedation seems appropriate; that way you could discuss a dose adjustment with your vet if needed.
