My dog has mites, Frontline isn't working. Why is he still itchy?

I am sorry to hear about your dog! If the itching started just after the application of the Frontline some dogs can have a hypersensitivity type reaction to topical medications like this where it can cause severe irritation to the skin. I would recommend calling the company and letting them know, and they can advise you on what steps to take (which also may include refunding your money). If he has a flea allergy than it will probably take a little bit of time for the itching to resolve. You could ask your vet for an anti-histamine or a corticosteroid to help relieve the itching. Make sure to use a monthly flea prevention, like NexGard, Frontline, Advantage, etc every month to prevent him from getting fleas again.

I'm so sorry to hear that Smokey is having this problem. Dogs that have flea allergies can be miserable with only 1 flea bite per week, so it doesn't take very many fleas to cause a problem. I have been very happy with Nexgard. It works differently than Frontline, so it might be more effective. There are a couple of different oral flea prevention products that can be given even though you have already done Frontline, so they will work together to get the problem under control ASAP. An oral flea preventive such as Nexgard or Simparica will help with chiggers, and it is safe to give in conjunction with Frontline. You may need to see your vet to get something stronger than Benadryl to control her itching however.

If you’re noticing increased itching in that area and you found a flea, you may try switching the flea prevention to see if that helps. Fleas can become immune to products. The top products on the market are oral products such as Nexgard and Simparica. Most pets can use these products but you should talk with your veterinarian before switching. They are administered once a month and at this point appear to work very well. If the itching goes away, then you know it was related to flea bites. Best of luck.

Frontline Plus is not as effective as it used to be and I saw it fail with my own personal pets. Some parts of the country might not see this problem but I actually lived in the 28112 zip code when that occurred. I would advise using a different topical such as ParaDefense, Vectra 3D, Advantix, etc to see if those products work better. Remember, Trifexis doesn't protect against ticks so make sure your topical product kills ticks also. Good luck with Maverick.

This would be the most common area for flea allergies to manifest themselves. With flea allergies, all it takes is one bite from a flea to send the whole body into an itch cycle. Sentry Plus is a generic form of Frontline, which doesn't seem to work as well as some of the newer, prescription flea preventatives. I would recommend that you have the dogs evaluated by the vet to determine if it is flea allergies, or something else like food allergies, mites, or a bacterial infection.
