Dog peeing a lot after neuter surgery? Is it normal and what to do?

Pet's info: Dog | Akita | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 100 lbs

My 21 month old Akita just got neutered yesterday, he has been urinating very much, and has had two accidents in home in large amounts! Is this normal, if so how many times should I take home out to prevent in home accidents?

The anaesthetic can stay in the system up to 24 hours which could still be effecting him. Alternatively he could be uncomfortable down there following the procedure. I wouldn't worry about it as yet if he seems bright but I would certainly get it checked out if it continues for a few days. Let him out often to try and avoid accidents.

Yes, it can be normal. It's a good sign that Tucker urinated already when he got home, and it could be that he simply doesn't have to urinate again. It would be concerning if he didn't urinate at all today after the surgery, but urinating once shows that things are working as they should. I wouldn't be concerned about this, but you can monitor him to be safe, and if he hasn't urinated again in 24 hours, then I would have him seen by a vet. This may be a temporary issue after neutering surgery, but it may be a sign correlated with urinary tract infections, which needs to be ruled out first.
A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Urine analysis and antibiotics may be needed.

Yes it can be. Sirius had anesthesia, a surgical procedure and medications for pain. His routine was changed and his eating and drinking also. Most likely they gave him fluids during the procedure that can cause increased urination. Please go back to his housebreaking training. I recommend keeping him in a crate when you’re not home, and taking him out frequently for potty breaks. Reward him and praise him when he goes outside. When you’re home keep Sirius on a leash with you so he’ll ask when he needs to go, and he can’t sneak off somewhere and mess in the house. Hello. I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble after your dog's surgery. Occasionally there will be after-effects from surgery that can include pain, increased thirst and accidents like you are describing. The increased thirst is likely contributing to the increased need to urinate. If this continues, I would have your veterinarian examine him, but it should pass within a few days.

Is it normal for a dog to sleep all day after being neutered?

It can definitely be normal for dogs to be quieter than usual for a few days after a surgical procedure. Moki is probably somewhat sore, and may still be getting some of the anesthesia drugs out of his system. As long as he's eating and drinking normally and still gets excited about the things he normally would, I wouldn't be overly concerned. Most dogs are back to normal by 7-10 days after surgery.

My dog was neutered. Why is he peeing a lot and is his wound swollen?

Eric's incision does look red with some bruising around his scrotum but in this picture it looks like it is intact with no obvious evidence of any problems. The constant urination is odd - if he had IV fluids with his procedure this could be the cause. 24 hours seems like a little long to still be urinating from fluids so you also might want to check in with your vet to see if they would recommend an exam.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Wyatt. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian today or an emergency hospital if his veterinarian is not available. He may be painful from the surgery still, but most dogs do not have trouble urinating after a neuter. He needs to be evaluated and will possibly need a urine sample tested. The medications may have unsettled his stomach, i recommend contacting your vets office to discuss stopping them early. Confining him to one room at a time with frequent leash walks may speed return to a normal routine

My puppy pees inside after neuter. Is it potty regression or UTI?

I wouldn't expect this behavior as a side effect from surgery and would be more concerned about a UTI or other medical problem. Puppies certainly can get urinary tract infections although they are a bit more common in female dogs than males. I would recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian who would likely recommend checking a urine sample. If Finn does not have a medical issue you could discuss what could be causing inappropriate urination and how to get him back on track with potty training.
