Dog's sensitive stomach, smelly poop/gas. How to fix without changing food?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 10 days old

I put my dog on Hills dry food instead of Purina because he has a really sensitive stomach but his poo smells absolutely disgusting but he's stopped having loose stools like he was having while on the other food. I don't want to change foods again as I don't want to upset his stomach, is there anything I can give him to stop it from smelling so bad? His gas also smells awful

If he is a young dog it is possible that he has a mild food allergy or an easily upset stomach (sometimes this is irritable bowl syndrome). Typically strong smelling gas in from the diet. I think slowly switching Ziggys food to maybe a different protein source of purina would help calm down or stop the gas. However, if you want to try an over the counter probiotic every day in the food and see if helping the good bacteria grow improved the gas. Do not forget to have a fecal checked for parasites just incase! hope that helps

It is normal for some dogs to be more gassy than others. You could try to add in a probiotic daily to see if this helps. Also if he is generally just smelly sometimes, I would have your vet do a thorough exam on him. Smell can come from ear infections, the mouth, the anal glands, skin infections or even around their prepuce. Your vet should be able localized the smell and help you solve it. Sometimes they just need a thorough bath. I hope this helps.

A common cause of gas in dogs is a poorly digested diet, but it can also be caused by intestinal parasites, GI tumors, gastroenteritis, spoiled food, or increased swallowing of air due to things such as respiratory infections or eating quickly. In an old dog, cancer is always a concern, and I would take Monty into your vet on Monday for a health check to rule out a medical cause behind his gas. The vet can also prescribe medications to help with the gas depending on the cause.

My dog has extreme gas. His current diet isn't working. What helps?

Hi there. I suggest you use a probiotic for Bentley. Fortiflora is my favorite but you can use any probiotic made for dogs (no human products or dairy). I would give it daily for one month to see if there are any changes. The probiotic adds "good bacteria" to his intestinal tract that may quiet the gas. My dog has soft stool and gas. What are the common causes and fixes?

This could be due to a number of things, most like;y him eating something that disagreed with him, something too rich that he isn't used to eating. If you changed his dog food recently or introduced wet food to his diet this could be what started it. Other possibilities include parasites, food allergies, or bacterial infection. Try feeding him a bland diet for a few days, plain cooked white rice mixed with an equal part of plain boiled chicken breast, unseasoned, or plain hamburger, cooked and the fat rinsed off. If the symptoms persist or get worse, including developing new symptoms like diarrhea, lethargy and loss of appetite, get him seen by your vet as soon as possible for an exam and fecal analysis.

My senior dog has gas, eats poop, and smells. Is his food the problem?

Gizzy is adorable! Thanks for including a picture! You didn't mention if the gas or diet was a recent change, but if the diet is the same and the gas and eating stool is new, then it certainly wouldn't be a bad idea to have your veterinarian examine Gizzy just to be on the safe side. There are a large number of reasons that dogs will eat their own stool. If your vet examines Gizzy and does not find any medical cause for his problems, certainly a diet change is a good thing to try. My dog has constant upset stomach, smelly gas, and mucusy poop. Is this normal?

This is not normal and could indicate a food intolerance, or infection. You can try to see if a bland diet and probiotics help to reduce the gas and mucousy poo. You can buy bland diets at the pet store (best option), or make a bland diet for him at home (boiled chicken, duck, or turkey plus potato, rice, pumpkin, etc.). If the his stools and gas improve with this diet, then it would be best to switch him to another food with different ingredients. If this doesn't help after 1-2 weeks of starting the diet, then I would be more suspicious of an infection and recommend he goes to a vet for an evaluation. Best dog food for German Shepherd gurgling stomach and stinky gas?

Excessive flatulence can have several causes. If Cujo eats fast, he may be swallowing a lot of air which has to come out eventually from either end. Divide his meals into smaller, more frequent portions or use a "slow feed" bowl to regulate his eating. You can also raise the bowls to prevent or limit air swallowing. Parasites can also be the cause. You can submit a stool sample to your vet to diagnose intestinal parasites. Diet plays a large role as well. Feed a premium diet, preferably grain free. These diets are more easily digested and the lack of grains decreases possible fermentation in the gut. You can also consider a probiotic such as ProViable or ProStora to promote gut health.
