My dog has excessive gas and a loud, gurgling stomach. What's wrong?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Sometimes, especially if there is more gas inside Darma's gastrointestinal tract, you can hear more gut sounds. This is similar to our stomach "growling". As long as she is not experiencing signs of vomiting or diarrhea, and she is acting herself and eating well, I would not be concerned! It sounds like Cokey may be experiencing some gas, and his stomach could be upset. I recommend trying a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days to see if that helps. If that doesn't help with his gas or he develops other signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, or extreme lethargy, I would take him into the vet. I hope this helps!

I think it would be fine to monitor him for now. However, if this turns into diarrhea or there is actual evidence of blood in the feces, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!

If this is the only sign you could try changing to a highly digestible diet (like Hill’s i/d or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Low Fat) as long as she doesn’t have any food intolerances or diseases requiring a therapeutic diet. Sometimes I also have people try a probiotic like Fortiflora. If she has also had a decrease in appetite, diarrhea or weight loss you should see your veterinarian.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The most common reason for excessive gas is the diet. I would change the protein (meat protein) in the food. Fish based diets are notorious to cause gas. I bet playing around with the food will prove successful. Good luck!

The most common reasons are bacterial imbalance issues, a poor response to the fiber in the diet or parasites. You may try switching the food. I recommend Royal Canin because it has a great fiber blend. You can start them on a probiotic - Purina FortiFlora is a great one. If there is not improvement after 2 weeks, have them checked for parasites. I hope this helps.

The signs you are describing can be due to dietary indiscretion (a treat, human food, or something Watson shouldn’t be getting into outside), inflammatory bowel disease, or a food sensitivity. I recommend having Watson seen by his vet to make sure his diet is appropriate, and rule out intestinal parasites, infections, and food sensitivities.
