My dog has a fever. When should I worry and call the vet immediately?

If your dog had been exercising or out in the heat it is possible his temperature could have increased due to this, but 104.1 is a pretty high temperature if you feel it was truly an accurate reading. We can see dogs temperatures get that high if they are really hot/excited/stressed and they are overweight or brachycephalic (smoosh faced) but I am concerned that his energy level was decreased. If he still doesn't seem himself tomorrow then I would bring him in for an exam. If overnight his temperature gets very high again, or he becomes weak, has trouble breathing, or his gums become pale in color or he starts having other symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea then I would consider bringing him in to the emergency vet.

A fever in dogs is a body temp above 103.5 F. Normal body temperature ranges from 99 F to 102.5 F. If she will allow, use a rectal thermometer to check Diamond's temperature. If she does have a fever, she will need to be examined by your veterinarian. Fevers have multiple causes, so your vet may recommend certain diagnostics. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can safely give at home to help if she does have a fever. Many OTC medications have a slim margin of safety or are downright toxic to dogs.

A fever this high is usually indicative of a bacterial or viral disease going on. Your veterinarian will need to run some tests to try and determine the cause of the fever. As with people, if a dog has a fever (temperature above approximately 39.2C, note temperatures taken rectally are most accurate in dogs) then they will most likely have an infection, or will be over heated (in cases of heat stroke for example). A fever would not be considered normal and if you are concerned about your dogs temperature I would recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian to have Bruno examined as soon as possible.

A dogs normal body temp is 101-102.5 so they will feel warm to us normally. You can use a rectal thermometer if you want to assess her temperature. If you feel she is worsening despite medication I recommend a veterinary visit. Do not give any human fever reducers as they are toxic to dogs. A dog's normal temperature can be as high as 102.5, so below that it's normal (99-102.5 is normal). Especially at such as young age, I wouldn't attempt any home treatments for a fever and get to a vet right away. That said, sugar and warm water wouldn't do anything for the fever, except if it encouraged extra drinking which could support general health

You don't need to give him any medications at the moment. human meds to reduce fever are not suitable for dogs and medications to reduce fever are rarely given in case of mild fever. if your dog does not seem to get better within 48 hours you should take him to the vet in order to get it checked and treated.
