My dog has a fever, and I'm worried about vet costs. What can I do?

Make sure it is in-fact a fever. Dogs have a higher temperature than people. If his temperature is less than 39C, then he does not have a fever. Fever usually indicates one of the following: 1). Infection 2) Toxin ingestion 3). Heat stress If he just got done playing and/or running around, then it may be heat stress. The temperature will go down if he stays calm in a cool environment. If it's not heat stress and his temperature is above 39C, then this is an emergency and he needs to go to the vet. Do not give any fever medication meant for people, because these can be dangerous. The vet will have to give special dog medicine to bring down the fever. I hope that helps and all is well with Softie.

A fever this high is usually indicative of a bacterial or viral disease going on. Your veterinarian will need to run some tests to try and determine the cause of the fever. Once the cause is identified the proper antibiotics, antifungals, or antipruritic drugs can be prescribed. The tablet given to your dog is basically a fever reducer but will not treat the cause of the fever. I would recommend taking your dog in for a recheck as soon as you’re able to. A dog's normal temperature can be as high as 102.5, so below that it's normal (99-102.5 is normal). Especially at such as young age, I wouldn't attempt any home treatments for a fever and get to a vet right away. That said, sugar and warm water wouldn't do anything for the fever, except if it encouraged extra drinking which could support general health

As with people, if a dog has a fever (temperature above approximately 39.2C, note temperatures taken rectally are most accurate in dogs) then they will most likely have an infection, or will be over heated (in cases of heat stroke for example). A fever would not be considered normal and if you are concerned about your dogs temperature I would recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian to have Bruno examined as soon as possible.

General tests to consider include bloodwork (CBC and chemistry panel), urinalysis, thoracic radiographs and ideally abdominal ultrasound. This would be a good place to start to see if the cause can be found. An infection is possible though other things like inflammatory diseases or cancer can also cause a fever. This can be done stepwise which may be more cost effective. Good luck and best wishes for your girl!

I am so sorry to hear that your pet has a fever of unknown origin I’m assuming. The vet has to run labs to try and find the source of the fever. Has she had any testing done? Bloodwork and urinalysis would be the first place I would start. If she has a high white blood cell count, then antibiotics can be started on her to treat for a suspected infection, which can then be assumed to be the source of the fever. Fever in pets doesn’t happen randomly, and in most cases antibiotics prescribed by your vet are needed. I would highly discourage you from using any over the counter human fever reducer medicaiton, as these can be quite toxic in pets. It’s best to feed Ava as normal and offer her plenty of access to water until she can be seen by your vet. I hope this helps. Best wishes in getting Ava’s fever to come down. If Mia has a fever it is probably because she is suffering from an infection. you need to take her to the vet in order to get her checked, if she has an infection indeed the vet will prescribe an antibiotic course for Mia to get better.
