Do dogs get fevers often? Is it common for all dogs to have one?

Hi there. Normal temperature in dogs ranges from 100.5 - 102.5. So 102.9 is just barely above normal, and not at all surprising if you've just been on a walk. This shouldn't be any cause for concern at all, as long as Bruno is acting normal :)

Make sure it is in-fact a fever. Dogs have a higher temperature than people. If his temperature is less than 39C, then he does not have a fever. Fever usually indicates one of the following: 1). Infection 2) Toxin ingestion 3). Heat stress If he just got done playing and/or running around, then it may be heat stress. The temperature will go down if he stays calm in a cool environment. If it's not heat stress and his temperature is above 39C, then this is an emergency and he needs to go to the vet. Do not give any fever medication meant for people, because these can be dangerous. The vet will have to give special dog medicine to bring down the fever. I hope that helps and all is well with Softie.

If your dog had been exercising or out in the heat it is possible his temperature could have increased due to this, but 104.1 is a pretty high temperature if you feel it was truly an accurate reading. We can see dogs temperatures get that high if they are really hot/excited/stressed and they are overweight or brachycephalic (smoosh faced) but I am concerned that his energy level was decreased. If he still doesn't seem himself tomorrow then I would bring him in for an exam. If overnight his temperature gets very high again, or he becomes weak, has trouble breathing, or his gums become pale in color or he starts having other symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea then I would consider bringing him in to the emergency vet.

A fever in dogs is a body temp above 103.5 F. Normal body temperature ranges from 99 F to 102.5 F. If she will allow, use a rectal thermometer to check Diamond's temperature. If she does have a fever, she will need to be examined by your veterinarian. Fevers have multiple causes, so your vet may recommend certain diagnostics. A dogs normal body temp is 101-102.5 so they will feel warm to us normally. You can use a rectal thermometer if you want to assess her temperature. If you feel she is worsening despite medication I recommend a veterinary visit. Do not give any human fever reducers as they are toxic to dogs. If she had kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection it can occasionally progress to pneumonia so Augustine needs a recheck with a vet if she is not improving I hope Augustine feels better soon. A fever is possible. You can take a rectal temperature. He may a fever if it is over 102. If he has a fever, it should be checked out by a vet. There are no recommend at home treatments for fever in dogs that are safe. Do not attempt to cool him since you can easily make puppies hypothermic. Either way, I would recommend that he get checked out by a vet to see if there is a possible reaction to his current ringworm treatment.
