My dog has a fever and is lethargic. Can I give him medicine?

A fever this high is usually indicative of a bacterial or viral disease going on. Your veterinarian will need to run some tests to try and determine the cause of the fever. Once the cause is identified the proper antibiotics, antifungals, or antipruritic drugs can be prescribed. The tablet given to your dog is basically a fever reducer but will not treat the cause of the fever. I would recommend taking your dog in for a recheck as soon as you’re able to. I would not recommend any over the counter medication to reduce a fever. Usually a fever secondary to vaccines resolves within 24 hours and does not require treatment. If the fever continues or you notice vomiting, diarrhea or swelling around Murphy's face and eyes I would recommend seeing a veterinarian.

Paracetamol and any other human fever meds are toxic to dogs, do not use them! If Brudo is not eating he must be very ill, you need to take him to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked and treated, he might be suffering from an infection that will require an antibiotic course.

Poor Cobalt! It sounds like he is lethargic, and he does have a slight fever. Unfortunately these are very general signs of illness, and could be caused by systemic illness, infection, or inflammation. I would keep an eye on him for now, and if the fever goes above 39.5, he stops eating, he continues to be lethargic, or he develops other signs such as vomiting, take him into a vet immediately. No, you cannot give her baby aspirin or any other human anti fever medications as most are very toxic to dogs, as she is running a fever and has nasal discharge it's pretty obvious she is suffering from an infection and will need to be taken to the vet ASAP, she will need an antibiotic course.

Hi, I would recommend that Sandy is rechecked and that you explain to your vet the difficulties you are experiencing. What is causing this temperature ? It’s impossible and useless to give oral medications to a dog that is vomiting. Ask your vet where does he think the source of infection is. In the meantime offer Sandy small amounts of water little and often and keep in a cooler place. Hope this helps.

Make sure it is in-fact a fever. Dogs have a higher temperature than people. If his temperature is less than 39C, then he does not have a fever. Fever usually indicates one of the following: 1). Infection 2) Toxin ingestion 3). Heat stress If he just got done playing and/or running around, then it may be heat stress. The temperature will go down if he stays calm in a cool environment. If it's not heat stress and his temperature is above 39C, then this is an emergency and he needs to go to the vet. Do not give any fever medication meant for people, because these can be dangerous.
