My Yorkie breathes fast, wheezes after dental work. Is it allergies?

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 5 lbs

I have a 6 year old 5lb yorkie who just had her first teeth cleaning and needed one tooth extracted. When I picked her up she had a slight wheeze/virbration in her throat area and it was a rough night the night we brought her home. Today she has eaten and drank but I feel like she’s breathing fast maybe? At rest she’s at 44 breaths per min. She has been having seasonal allergies as well so i don’t know if the tube in her throat is just irritated it plus allergies is making her do it?

It could be irritation from the ET tube causing it, and since she has seasonal allergies, it could be a combination of both. Keep an eye on Abby, and if this problem continues, have her seen by a vet again. Best of luck.

It could be caused by heart problems or lungs disease (infection, inflammation, lung mass etc). Sometimes faster respiration is due to collapsed trachea and upper airways infection (common in Yorkies) or abdominal pathology. Please, get in touch with your vet as Bella should be checked over. Your vet may recommend chest x-ray, heart scan or abdominal ultrasound to make the final diagnosis.

Hi. Yes it is normal to havevsime coughing or irritation there after an endotraceal tube is used. If it continues beyond 3-5 days, or if there are also other signs, I would call your veterinarian first thing in the morning.

My dog has food allergies. Is her heavy breathing an allergy symptom?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While this can be due to allergies especially if these are resulting in upper respiratory signs, this seems less likely. I think it is more likely to be due to something else like a concurrent upper respiratory infection. Unfortunately, without an exam it would be hard to say what is going on with Yusi. Issues such as allergies to something in the environment such as pollen, upper respiratory infections, issues with the nose, throat, or lungs, and other underlying health issues can all be possible causes. If this has happened more than once, is ongoing, or Yusi seems very ill or in distress, it is a good idea to schedule a veterinary checkup to rule out any health issues and get any symptoms treated.

Poor pup! Without being able to examine him in person and listen to his breathing, it's hard to say whether he just got choked on some water in the shower, or if this is something more serious. Breathing issues can be a life-threatening emergency in many cases, so the best advice I can give is to take him to your nearest emergency clinic right away to be assessed. The veterinarian there should be able to give you a better idea of what's going on, and see what kind of treatment is needed.

My dog has a recurring cold, mucus, and whistling breath. Dental?

If the problem returned I would let Precious' vet know. They may want to see her for a recheck, or start her on another course of antibiotics to make sure whatever is causing the issue is completely gone. Your vet will likely want to make sure she is healthy and can breath properly before she can be given a dental cleaning as these involve anesthesia.
