My dog has a recurring cold, mucus, and whistling breath. Dental?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 years and 11 months old | 4 lbs

When she went to her annual check up earlier this month she’s healthy but her doctor said she had a cold & mucus in her throat. She gave her an antibiotic shot & it soon went away. However, it has come back. Sometimes if she lets out a deep breath there’s like a whistle sound that happened the first time too. I purchased a humidifier but is there anything else that can be done? It’s been extremely cold lately. Also, should I wait until that clears up to schedule her dental cleaning?

If the problem returned I would let Precious' vet know. They may want to see her for a recheck, or start her on another course of antibiotics to make sure whatever is causing the issue is completely gone. Your vet will likely want to make sure she is healthy and can breath properly before she can be given a dental cleaning as these involve anesthesia.
