My dog has a recurring cold, mucus, and whistling breath. Dental?

Bad breath is usually due to teeth and gum disease. If Precious has not had dental treatment before, then this is definitely a possibly. This often happens with breeds of dogs that have short/smashed-appearing muzzles. It can happen due to various structural deformities such as small nostril size, or an elongated soft palate. If this is something that suddenly started, then I would be more worried about laryngeal paralysis, or a polyp causing her to have obstructed breathing. Given the multiple possibilities and the likely need for treatment, I recommend you have Precious examined by a veterinarian. They can quickly narrow-down the cause of the bad breath and snoring. A cough can be respiratory or heart related. I would make sure that Precious does not have a heart murmur. If she does I would consider either a cardiologist or x-ray prior to the dental procedure. It is not normal for an occasional cough but ruling between respiratory and heart will help narrow down what is going on with Precious. I think it's a good idea to get Precious checked out again if the coughing is returning. Sometimes it's an infection and other times it persistent inflammation. The doctor may recommend a medication to break up mucus and/or decrease inflammation. Until you get her into the vet, make her drinking water tepid and avoid excessive activity that will cause her to bark a lot of pant. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Precious. The medications given to her before anesthesia will help to keep her calm. Propofol is used to induce anesthesia and then she will breathe gas to keep her under. All of these drugs will lessen her anxiety. After being intubated, sometimes the tube placed in the airway can cause irritation leading to a cough or other abnormal breathing sounds. What you are describing sounds almost as if Token has an excessive soft palate causing the snoring sound. I would recommend taking him back to the veterinarian that performed the dental cleaning and having him / her examine Token so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Dental disease can cause severe infection in the mouth and throat which could potentially be inhaled into the chest as well as affecting the kidneys and heart. You should have him examined by a vet, he may require urgent treatment if he has developed a pneumonia

Hi, yes I would definitely contact the vet and arrange for Shorty to be checked over. Your vet will want to know if there might be any symptoms possibly related to the dental procedure. Sometimes there can be communication between teeth and nasal area if infection was quite deep, so best to speak to your vet !
