My dog's eyelid cyst is growing. Can I shrink it without surgery?

To me, this looks like a Meibomian gland cyst. These are best removed surgically. It is unlikely that it will go away on it's own. It will likely continue to grow. The surgery will remove part of the lid margin, and then close with a suture. They heal very well.

It is difficult to say for sure without seeing it in person but it looks like a meibomian gland cyst. They have small gland along their eyelids that will get clogged and form these which resemble tumors. If she previously had one removed in this area, this could be that one growing back or a different one. If it isn't causing her eye to be irritated, red, or to squint then you could just watch it. If it is growing or irritated her eye or if you are unsure, I would have your vet take a look at it. It is always easier for a vet to remove it while it is small than waiting until it becomes really large. I hope this helps!

There is nothing you can do at home to reduce it or make it go away. You can talk to your vet about financial options such as accepting Care Credit to help. There may be some local rescues or organizations that have funds to assist in the cost also

Unfortunately you cannot do much back home as the easiest way to treat them would be to try some antibiotics+antiinflammatory drops which are on prescription anyway. This treatment may help in case of inflammatory ''bumps'' and can reduce their size. In the case the bumps have a completely different nature (skin cyst or benign or malignant tumors) a completely different approach is required. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration).

You can try and place a cold compress on the area for 2-3 minutes several times a day to see if this helps and lightly massage the area to see if this gets the swelling down. You can also try an anti-inflammatory for dogs, which can be found at your local pet store. I would recommend Well and Good Buffered Aspirin, which can be found at PetCo. If there is no improvement or the swelling increases, I would recommend having Lilly examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. If it is a cyst and it keeps growing I would recommend removing it with surgery. Cysts can get bigger and rupture and get infected after they rupture. The only way to get rid of a cyst is to actually surgically remove it. It may rupture and get smaller but it will not actually go away. I would ask your veterinarian about the option to freeze the wart off. it is small enough that it may work. However, working near the eye with the freezing solution is risky because the freezing solution could go into the eye and that would be bad. There are cotton swabs you can freeze and then apply the cotton swab to the wart and see if a few treatments with this would help shrink the mass down in size. Unfortunately, surgical removal is typically the best way to get rid of these masses. I hope this helps!
