My old dog has a bleeding eye wart. Can it be treated without surgery?

It is very common for older, small breed dogs to get these benign warts. I usually only recommend removal if they are causing issues (like this one). If you can't get it to heal you may have to have it surgically removed. I suggest you order this wound spray to put on it. Use as directed. If no improvement, have your vet check it out. The pictures look like benign warts, but It is always a good idea to have your vet examine any masses on M. In general, if a wart is bleeding it is worth considering removing it, so it would be worth discussing that with your vet as well. However, we often do not remove warts if they are not causing a problem. I understand your concern! I think surgery is ususally your best option at having the eye growths removed if they are a problem. I would recommend a IV catheter to make sure Mitch is getting proper supportive care during surgery. Typically elevated liver values like the ALP could be due to older age. I would recommend doing what you are comfortable with and talking through all your concerns with the vet doing the surgery. I hope that helps

Hello. Are these warts? These are the most common non-cancerous growths we see, & they are especially common on poodles. If surgery concerns you, please talk to your vet about freezing the growths off using a special liquid nitrogen product available to vets called Verruca Freeze. Unfortunately, this is not likely to be something that you can do at home - cryosrugery is occasionally used for lesions like this in dogs, but this is not something that most general practitioners would have the necessary equipment to do. Over-the-counter products for human warts (like Dr. Scholl's "Freeze Off") are not approved for use on dogs, and would not be expected to be effective on sebaceous adenomas because these are quite different from warts at the cellular level - it's more likely that they would become irritated and inflamed by the treatment, rather than being successfully frozen off. I have never seen any other successful option for these growths apart from surgical removal as needed, unfortunately. If the growths are quite small, it may be possible to remove them with a local anesthetic and possibly a bit of light sedation - you could certainly talk with your vet about this option if you are concerned about costs, or risks of anesthesia.

The most common tumors that we see along eyelid margins are tumors called Meibomian Gland tumors. It is generally recommended to remove them when they are small since it can often be done without general anesthesia. If they continue to grow, the surgery will be more invasive. If they are small and just on top of the skin, there is an instrument used to help freeze them off. Sometimes can require a light sedation but not general anesthesia. It is worth seeing if you can find a vet that has a cyroprobe to help get rid of some of them.
