Will my pet's cyst go away on its own, or does it need surgery?

The cyst is likely what we call a fluid filled cyst. It is a benign sac of fluid. To me, this looks like a Meibomian gland cyst. These are best removed surgically. It is unlikely that it will go away on it's own. It will likely continue to grow. The surgery will remove part of the lid margin, and then close with a suture. They heal very well.

I can't tell you for sure without seeing your kitty, but from what you describe I think there is a good chance it will heal on its own without further intervention. It must have been a cyst all along and finally ruptured. Sometimes I go in later and surgically remove these only if they become a recurrent problem that is not well-managed with antibiotics alone.

Sebaceous cyst will often fill with thick material and often you are able to pop or express the material from the cyst. As long as it is not painful, inflamed, or has bloody or purulent discharge there's no need to take Brennan immediately to the vet. The cyst will likely fill up again, they usually will not completely go away without surgical removal of the entire system lining.
