My dog's eye turned yellow/red and looks like bleeding. Is it urgent?

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | spayed | 17 years and 10 months old | 8 lbs

My dog had cataracts but could not do the surgery because she was found to have retinal disease- she has her 6mo check up scheduled for Tuesday but today I noticed her left eye which was always worse and completely white, now has a yellow and refinish tint- when the light hits almost looks like bleeding behind- her eyes are watering a lil and she gets squinty when u try to look at it, but and doesn't seem in pain- I am going to call them tomorrow but didn't know if this is something urgent

I am sorry to hear about your Pomeranian! If she doesn't seem to be in pain right now then I don't think it is an emergency that needs to be seen tonight. It sounds like she is likely blind already? The only reason to bring her in urgently would be in case there was an issue where vision could be lost if she didn't have urgent treatment (i.e. retinal detachment, severe glaucoma) but from your description, I am guessing her vision is gone so that wouldn't be a concern? If she does become uncomfortable (rubbing eyes, increased watering/squinting, whining, inability to rest) then you may consider a trip to the emergency vet.

That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. It's very concerning that it appears her eyes may have drained out, and she could have an ulcer that has penetrated the layers of the eye so deeply that the fluid has drained out. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Why is my dog's eye dark red and bloody this morning? Is it serious?

I would recommend taking Princess in for a veterinary exam. Eyes tend to heal quickly or get bad quickly. The one picture looks similar to a scleral hematoma, but the other picture looks like something is going on in the cornea. The cornea can be an emergency situation if there is an ulcer present. The veterinarian will do some diagnostics like an eye stain and prescribe appropriate medications for her. Eye injuries are painful, so she might need pain meds. Oh dear! It sounds like Barrett may have injured his eye somehow. Without being able to examine him, it's hard to say how serious this is or what kind of treatment may be needed. Eye problems like this do need to be diagnosed and treated promptly, since there is a risk of permanent damage or vision loss with any delay in treatment - because of this, I would really recommend taking him to an emergency vet tonight to have this checked. If you call your regular vet's office, their voicemail message should have contact information for your nearest emergency clinic, or a doctor on-call for emergencies.

What is showing in her eye is her third eyelid, and given that it has worsened over the day, yes, I do recommend an emergency appointment. Dog's eye red and painful after kennel. Should I take her to the vet?

Poor Macy! Without being able to see her eye, I can't say for sure what might be going on. But if she is acting painful and the eye is visibly red or bloody, I would be concerned that she may have injured it somehow in the crate. Eye problems should always be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible, since there can sometimes be permanent damage or vision loss if treatment is delayed - so ideally, I would recommend taking her to an emergency clinic tonight to be seen. If this isn't possible, I would take her to see your regular vet first thing in the morning.

My dog has a red, painful eye. Is it serious and what should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh goodness! Poor Paris! Sadly Paris needs to see a Vet for her eye. A painful red eye needs immediate Veterinary care. Possible causes are: a corneal ulcer, infection, allergies, trauma, inflammation or glaucoma. There are specific medications that are safe for the eye and she needs a diagnosis first.
