Old dog suddenly blind, eyes look drained. Is it an emergency?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Wire Fox Terrier | Female | spayed

Our dog has trouble seeing. It began sometime at the beginning of the week, while we were on vacation. The person taking care of her noticed she could not find him very well. When we got back today, she was laying on the lawn, but stood up when called. Her eyes looked like they might've drained out or something, but I didn't get a very good look. She is a very old dog, and we are scared for her. She is a wired fox hair terrier. What should we do? We want the best for her.

I would take Lady into the vet immediately. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. It's very concerning that it appears her eyes may have drained out, and she could have an ulcer that has penetrated the layers of the eye so deeply that the fluid has drained out. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.
