My dog's eye looks weird. Should I see a vet or try home care?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Bumps on eye-lids can be cysts, but they can also be other masses like tumors. For this reason getting it checked is recommended. In the mean-time, I would check for squinting, moving away from your hand when you go to pet him on that side of the face, redness/blueness/whiteness of the eye-ball itself that is different from the other eye, or scratching/pawing at the eye. If any of these are occuring, then I would take Marley to a vet. If he isn't too concerned about it, and isn't squinting or moving away from you, and is only minimally pawing at it, then I would recommend getting an E-collar (you can pick one up from any emergency clinic without an appointment as it is now late in Australia), to prevent ongoing trauma to the eye which can get much much worse with scratching. The best thing you can do for Itchy Cotrich until you can take him to the vet is to put an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent him from scratching the mass and eye, as this could make matters much worse. Hello, My name is Dr. Elizabeth and I am happy to help. That may be a sty but it could also be an infected hair follicle, blocked pore or other type of infection. If it's still there on Monday or if Caesar is still rubbing at it, I recommend to have him examined. In the mean time, have Caesar wear an elizabethan collar at all times. If he accidently scratches his eye while rubbing at it, he'll need to go to the vet before Monday. Have him wear the collar at all times. You can apply a warm compress to it every couple of hours for 10 minutes. This might help it to come to a head. If it ruptures, gently clean it with water and protect it from rubbing. If it's not dried up by Monday, also have him examined. I hope this helps and please feel free to reach out any time.

It may be a cyst or local infection/irritation. Monitor for rapid change or growth, discharge or bleeding as well as discomfort. Ideally, he can be examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the underlying cause and provide the appropriate treatment. If he is pawing or rubbing at it, place an e-collar (cone) on him until he sees the vet.

It definitely looks irritated and like there could be a possible cyst or growth there. I would have it examined by a vet in person so that it can be looked at more closely and treated as needed, especially since it's by the eye, bothersome, and been there a while. In addition, placing an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Midnight is a good idea as this will stop her from being able to paw at it and may reduce the irritation to it some.

There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. It appears that your dog has an eyelid mass. I would have him seen by your family veterinarian to discuss removal and make sure it is not causing damage to the eye. In the meantime, place a cone on him to prevent rubbing.
