Why is my dog's watery eye getting worse? Should I see a vet?

I am afraid that this red mass looks like a tumor or multicystic mass. This is definitely something that needs to be seen by a vet as it a) keeps your dog from closing his eye lid which can damage the eye to the point of losing vision (will dry out the cornea), and b), tumors can grow invasively, ie destroy the eye. Your vet will examine the mass, possibly take a little bit of tissue to examine under the microscope or send in to a pathology lab and then, depending on the findings, discuss treatment options, which could include removal of the mass alone (if possible), medication to remove it or make it shrink, or even removal of the eye. Please make an appointment with your veterinarian soon.

It may be a cyst or local infection/irritation. Monitor for rapid change or growth, discharge or bleeding as well as discomfort. Ideally, he can be examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the underlying cause and provide the appropriate treatment. If he is pawing or rubbing at it, place an e-collar (cone) on him until he sees the vet.

The vast majority of eyelid masses are benign, but it sounds as though Jasper's mass is causing some irritation to his eye given the redness and discharge. It sounds as though he should be examined by his vet and will likely need to have the mass removed. If Jasper seems to be scratching at his eye or rubbing it on anything, make sure that he is wearing an e-collar (cone) to prevent injury to the eye itself. I hope that he is on the mend soon!

I am sorry to hear this! His eye does look very irritated- and the area around his eye that has a 'cobblestone' appearance suggests that he has some chronic irritation. I would want to rule out a few things that cause these signs including stray eyelashes that are 'ingrown', eyelid abnormalities, allergies and mites. The good news is that most of these things can be treated successfully! I would bring him in and have a few eye tests done and have them closely examined with magnification (sometimes an ophthalmologist is recommended) and see what kind of treatment plan is needed. Until you can bring him in, over the counter lubricating eye drops may bring some short term relief. I hope this helps!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Bumps on eye-lids can be cysts, but they can also be other masses like tumors. For this reason getting it checked is recommended. In the mean-time, I would check for squinting, moving away from your hand when you go to pet him on that side of the face, redness/blueness/whiteness of the eye-ball itself that is different from the other eye, or scratching/pawing at the eye. If any of these are occuring, then I would take Marley to a vet. If he isn't too concerned about it, and isn't squinting or moving away from you, and is only minimally pawing at it, then I would recommend getting an E-collar (you can pick one up from any emergency clinic without an appointment as it is now late in Australia), to prevent ongoing trauma to the eye which can get much much worse with scratching. I would then get Marley to your vet in the morning. Best of luck with Marley.

Fortunately, the majority of eyelid masses on dogs are benign Meibomian gland adenomas. As long as the mass does not start growing significantly, bleeding, or causing Murphy to scratch, continue monitoring progression of these masses with photos to show to your vet in August. If anything changes significantly or seems to bother Murphy, he should go in for an exam sooner. Since he has fear-based aggression (very common!) and will need to have his eyes thoroughly examined, consider calling his vet to ask if he should have a sedative at home prior to his exam both to decrease stress and allow for a more thorough exam. Hello, thank you for your question about Chloe. Based on the photos that you've attached and the symptoms that you are describing it sounds like Chloe may have a mass/tumor on her eyelid. These are generally benign and do not lead to systemic problems. Other possible causes include a cyst or local infection. Since this lesion is growing in size I would recommend having Chloe seen by your veterinarian. If it continues to grow it may lead to problems on the surface of her eye.
