My Yorkie's eye ulcer won't heal. Is she in pain and always shut?

It looks like Dylan may have a melting ulcer or a descemetocoele, which is a serious problem that can result in loss of the eye. I would take him to your veterinarian right away as this would constitute an ocular emergency.

Unfortunately eye pain can be difficult to treat - oral medications sometimes don’t seem to make much difference. There is some evidence that tramadol is not metabolized well in dogs so I think gabapentin might be a reasonable alternative. Ultimately healing the ulcer will be most important - if it does not seem to be healing well you may need to see a specialist to have a burr procedure or keratotomy in order for it to heal. Topical pain medication might be another option but can sometimes slow the healing process.

Poor girl. In uncomplicated cases of an eye ulcer the pet normally starts to improve significantly after 7 days. I would have her seen again my your vet soon. The eye ulcer this time around may be deeper or perhaps even resistant to the antibiotic. Sometimes pets also require surgical procedures on the eye to get the ulcer to heal. If the ulcer doesn't seem to be healing fast enough you should take Spike back to your vet, they should prepare some serum to put in his eye every 2-3 hours (serum is prepared from whole blood, it can be from your dog or from another dog). serum is considered the best non invasive treatment for eye ulcers.

I would recommend taking Sadie back in for a recheck. If the eye is very painful it may need more aggressive therapy. Many times all stars require medication every two hours around the clock. And or in some cases surgical debridement or repair is necessary. If you feel her I was not improving discuss referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist to have her Eye evaluated. Also discuss pain medication options with your veterinarian, as ulcers can be very painful. Poor Molly! Yes, you should take her to the vet if she is having eye discharge and seems to be rubbing her eye. Molly may have a corneal ulcer, uveitis, or even just allergies causing these issues. Eyes are fairly delicate structures and problems can progress rapidly, so it's better to be safe than sorry in these cases. Until you can get to the vet, keep an e-collar (cone) on Molly to prevent further rubbing or scratching of the eye, as this could make matters worse. I hope that she feels better soon!

It appears that there is a severe corneal ulcer on the left eye but hard to say for sure for the right eye. The ulcer appears to be a melting ulcer, which is quite severe. These eyes need the care of an eye specialist and further treatment. Many times, drops alone won't be enough to treat the eye. I would consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.
