Why is my dog's eye twitching after a face trim? Is it serious?

Poor guy. Unfortunately we see this a lot with pets that recently get groomed. It is likely Corry got some chemicals (i.e. shampoo, conditioner) in his eye, causing it to create an ulcer or scratch. He will need to see your local vet to have a stain test done on his eye to determine if our suspicions are right here. If he does have this going on, then a short course of prescription eye antibiotics should take care of the issue, as long as it has not progressed too far. Oh no, poor Sparkles! Her eyes could be red due to allergies, infection, or injury. She could be twitching because she's in pain or she doesn't feel well. The eye is such an important and delicate structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take Sparkles into a vet now to be examined, diagnosed, and treated.

If there are no other abnormalities that you have noticed, this could just be a simple eye twitch similar to what we get. Sometimes it can be caused by dehydration or stress. However, if it seems to be getting worse, if there are other abnormalities, if you see squinting or rubbing of the eye, or you are very concerned about it, I recommend that you have Toby checked out by a vet. Sometimes this can be a sign of neurologic damage, electrolyte abnormalities, or malnutrition/malabsorption. Your vet will do a thorough physical exam, ocular exam, and attempt to do a neurologic exam (it can be very difficult in puppies!). The vet may recommend bloodwork or further diagnostics on the eye to see if there is a medical cause for the twitching and eye rolling.

Yes, if it is looking a bit swollen and red, and she is blinking her eye more than normal, I would recommend taking her to the vet tomorrow to have this checked - these can be signs of infection, so it sounds like she may need a course of antibiotics to help resolve the problem.

I strongly recommend you video the twitching in case you need to show it to your vet later. I would not be overly concerned at this stage if he is otherwise acting normally and the twitching is not a continuous thing. Twitching in only isolated areas is usually a partial seizure. So, I think you should monitor Baxter for now and if the twitching persists or he has multiple episodes then you should have your vet check him out.

Without seeing your dog in person we cannot say for certain, but it is possible that this could be a subconjunctival hemorrage. It can be a result of hypertension (elevated blood pressure), trauma, coagulopathy (blood clotting disorder). Usually this goes away on its own eventually, but if he is acting uncomfortable then a vet visit it best. They can test your dog's blood pressure, and be sure there are no signs of a bleeding disorder, and give pain medication if needed to make him more comfortable.

It is likely that some shampoo, air from the dryer, or even small bits of hair from trimming got in your dog's eye and caused irritation. You can try to rinse your dog's eye gently with saline solution (like you use for contacts). However, there could be a scratch on your dog's eye (the cornea) as well. If it doesn't look better in 24 hours, see your veterinarian for testing to see if there is a scratch on your dog's eye and get appropriate medication.
