My dog has red eyes and is twitching. Why is she acting so strange?

Isabella needs to be examined by the veterinarian today. Signs like this are concerning for a scratch on the eye or something trapped in the eye. These conditions are not only very painful but they can also get worse quickly. She also needs to wear an elizabethan collar at all times to stop any rubbing. Have her examined quickly so she is out of pain and gets the correct treatment.

If there are no other abnormalities that you have noticed, this could just be a simple eye twitch similar to what we get. Sometimes it can be caused by dehydration or stress. However, if it seems to be getting worse, if there are other abnormalities, if you see squinting or rubbing of the eye, or you are very concerned about it, I recommend that you have Toby checked out by a vet. Sometimes this can be a sign of neurologic damage, electrolyte abnormalities, or malnutrition/malabsorption. Your vet will do a thorough physical exam, ocular exam, and attempt to do a neurologic exam (it can be very difficult in puppies!). The vet may recommend bloodwork or further diagnostics on the eye to see if there is a medical cause for the twitching and eye rolling.

I would have Sandra seen by a vet immediately. She could have allergies or an infection causing the itching. Any eyecondition should be considered an emergency, as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. The vet can diagnose what is causing Sandra's eye problem so she can be treated. Please take her into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see her ASAP.

Poor Maggie! Red eyes can occur for a variety of conditions, including corneal ulcers, anterior uveitis, blood clotting disorders, infectious conjunctivitis, among others. Eyes are delicate structures and can progress rapidly, so I recommend taking Maggie to her vet fairly urgently for evaluation to get to the bottom of things. Until you can get to the vet, put an e-collar (cone) on Maggie to prevent her from rubbing or scratching her eye, as this can make matters worse. I hope that she feels better soon!

Hello, The constant closing of the eye is called a "blepharospasm" and is often a pain induced reflex to keep the eye closed. Dogs also often show pain by becoming less active and interested in food. I'm concerned that what is going on with Spike is painful and that is causing his change in behavior. I would recommend taking him into a vet to be seen and find out what exactly is going on with his eye. They will likely recommend a trio of three basic eye tests, which can diagnose most of the eye diseases that affects our pets. The first one is called a fluoroscein stain, which is a dye that can tell us if there is any ulcers (scratches or defects) in the cornea, the outermost layer of the eye.. A tonometry test measures the pressures of the eye globe to rule out a couple of diseases called glaucoma or uveitis. A schirmer tear test can measure the tear production of the eye, as lack of tear production is another common cause of eye disease in dogs.
